It is confusing and I personally don't like the term.
A chemical pregnancy refers to a conception that the cells don't divide properly and the pregnancy fizzles out. Usually this happens very early before 6 weeks.
It is termed chemical as you wouldn't know you were pregnant except for the"chemical" response of the preg test.
Many chemical pregnancies are marked as late periods that were heavier than usual...
I always thought a chemical pg was where the egg was fertilised, but failed to implant.
No. A pregnancy will not produce hcg until it implants. Usually chemical pregnancies have very low levels of hcg and end very soon after implantation occurs - thus they are often characterised by a "late period" that may be heavier than usual.
