Hi,
This is my first cycle temping.
So this might be stating the obvious but I can't tell when I am going to ovulate, only after I have ovulated? Right? This is really confusing. How is it really meant to be able to help me then?
Any tips greatly appreciated - sorry for the confusion.
Taking your temp alone will only be able to tell you when you have already ovulated. Women that have been temping for a while can usually tell from the pattern of their temps if ovulation is approaching, but this does take time. My advice would be to make sure you are checking your cervical mucous as well as cervix postion. This will give you a better indication of when you are approaching your fertile time.
If you are unsure of when you ovulate, you can try ovulation predictor kits, which will give you a bit of notice as too ovulation approaching.

Can someone tell me, when you enter your BBT temp in the data part for your chart, in fertfriend, will it then say something below to say "no indication of ovluation occurring at this point" or something so that i know its looked at my temperature and said "nope you are not ovulating right now" does that make sense? sorry im new at it

Renstar it has some interpretation below if you are VIP, but it will not tell you that you have ovulated, about 3dpo you will get a coverline. Lots of the VIP features which give you info about where you are in your cycle will not be available to you since you are past the first 30 days free VIP feature trial.
Usually your temps dip just before you ovulate, then rise afterwards. Check out my charts in my sig to see what I'm talking about.

Matilda, apart from confirming ovulation (even if it's after the event), watching your temperatures can give you a bit of a clue about when AF is due to arrive or if it's worth testing. If your luteal phase is usually 12 days and your temperature is still high (well above the coverline) at 12 DPO, then it would be worth testing with an early HPT. If your temperature plummets towards the coverline or below it, you can expect AF fairly soon afterwards. As the others have wisely said, temping helps you learn what your cycle pattern is like. Woman to woman it can vary greatly. Wishing you lots of luck and baby dust for your TTC journey. :D
Renstar, a jump of more than .1 of a degree halfway through your cycle is usually a good clue of ovulation, FF will give you the coverline high five after you've recorded a few consecutive high temperatures after that spike. Good luck!! :D
