I'm not sure if it's the same, but i frequently get the feeling like a pinched nerve down in my lower back (also upper back - due to different reasons), and i also usually get it after resting, laying down or sitting. I mentioned it to my Doctor and she said it's purely hormonal and she said there wasn't much i could do about it.
The physio at our pre-natal classes said that there are ligaments at the back of the pelvis, joining the two hip bones to the tail bone. Some women experience pain here because these ligaments are looser during pregnancy. Some women experience groin pain for the same reason (at the front where the ligaments join the two hip bones together where your pubic bone is). I guess it is important to sit comfortably, not putting too much pressure on this area, and maybe ask your physio-OB for some exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles and help support your lower back.
Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback,
I totally forgot to ask my OB when I went in last week... It's like I walk through her door and go blank. Even when I write a list of questions, i forget to get the list out....
it's definetly my tail bone and not my lower back, I remember once as a good being thrown off a horse and landing on my butt, it feels the same. lol
I am getting this pain too. It is like I have been sitting really heavily in my chair. (Hmm, maybe I have put on too much weight.) I have no help to give you but you are not alone. My midwife suggested acupuncture so I will give it a go sometime. I will let you know if I get around to making an appointment.
Thank goodness im not the only one. I was only whinging to my DH about it again on the weekend. Everytime i sit down it feels like i have a bruise on my tail bone. Its just that first contact thats uncomfortable.
I have this too it is very uncomfortable. My sister said that yoga should help and I start that next week. I never had this the first time around so it is weird to me.
I will mention it to my Ob too and see what he says.
I also have this pain. I told my midwife and she said it was purely related to the hormones. The pain is most when I stand up from sitting down, but when I am sitting down, it kind of feels like a little baby marble is right underneath my bum!! VERY uncomfortable!!
It sounds like your sacro-illiac joints and sacrum are loosening in preparation for the birth, and it is your hormones that are responsible for the softening. This is something that happens to every pregnant body and it is very easy to over-do it and hurt yourself, speaking from experience!
The pelvic joints are held together by ligaments and it is a good idea to stretch and strengthen these mucsles, so see if you can get a referral to see your local hospital physiotherapist so they can show you how. I found out after 2 weeks of limping around in pain (especially after standing up) that I could have got a referral to see a physio, for free too.
I get similar pains, but it only seems to affect me when I'm lying down.. I simply put it down to baby doesn't like bed time lol..
Thanks everyone,
Well there is certainly a lot of sitting on my butt being done and extra weight on it too.
oh well i'll add it to the list of pregnancy woes...
thanks again, at least I know its not just me.
I have no medical explanation but I definately have the same thing when I sit for long periods of time. Long cvar trips are terrible and sitting in meetings for more than 1 hr mean a VERY sore coxic (think that's how you spell it!). Just figured it was part of the whole deal - see how it goes!
August moon i think you are correct, the pelvic bones start to move around a little, i have had the same problem, i have been seeing a massage therapist and an osteo, who realign my pelvis (no crunching, gentle muscle work) and it is SOOOO much better!
Hi Ange
Great to hear you are finding some relief and feeling better! I've been looking into seeing an osteo too as a massage therapist friend recommended it. I think its fair to say your pelvis is the most important part of your body in childbirth so looking after it during pregnancy will pay off in labour (we hope!!). So I hope it all continues to go well for you.
