My Beautiful Twins (VERY long)
DH & I found out we were having twins at our 20 week ultrasound, so we had a bit of a shock when we saw 2 babies instead of 1. We had to change hospitals, and our ante-natal management changed as well as we now had to see an OB instead of just our GP.
As we got further along in the pg, the OB said to us that 75% of twin pg's are born by 35 weeks, so we told him that with 2 older kidlets who both had to be induced because of post dates, we told him we would probably be in the 25%. He just smiled and said "We'll see". (I thought he said it a bit smugly).
We got to 35 weeks, then 36, then 37. At that appointment he admitted we were right, (Yay!) and then made an appointment for an induction the following week.
Monday 25th September
9.30a.m. Arrived at hospital, taken into a labour ward, examined by a MW, had a lovely chat, told I was 1 cm dilated, would be having these babies tonight & had the first lot of gel inserted.
1 p.m. DH & I had a walk around then went back to the birthing suite. Had another chat to the MW.
3 p.m. Nothing was happening so I told DH to go home & give my mum a break from looking after the other 2. I read my book.
5.15 p.m. Food!
6 p.m. Another check, still nothing happening, another lot of gel.
8.30 p.m. I get taken to my room.
Tuesday 26th September
2a.m. Get woken up by 3 painful contractions, go to the loo, flush...and the contractions go away with it.
6.30 Wake up, have a shower, wait for breakfast. Read some more of my book.
9.30 Get taken back into another birthing suite, 'cause I definitely have to have these bubs today. MW does a little scan which shows that twin 2 is breech. Nothing happening.
12 p.m. MW gets the OB to check that everything is fine before she breaks the waters to twin 1. She does, still nothing happening. DH comes in.
3 p.m. I now have to have the drip, and because It is very likely that the OB will have to put his hands in me to pull twin 2 out, I decide to have an epidural. The anaesthatist came in, put it in, I lay down, the MW started the drip, I threw up. Great. Still nothing happening.
5 p.m. The CTG machine is showing numbers healthy heartbeats in the 2 bubs, but my contraction numbers aren't showing anything higher than 20. It did go to 120 once, ...when I threw up.
5.45. p.m. Nothing happening, so I tell DH to go home, have some tea then come back. DH says he will go at 6p.m. MW wants me to hurry up 'cause she wants to deliver these babies before her shift finishes. She said that twins being born naturally are becoming a lot less common, so she wants these! All through the afternoon, we've had a lot of different MW's poking their heads in all hoping that I'm labour, because they all want to help!
5.50 p.m. CTG still showing contractions of 20.
5.52 p.m. Feel pressure on my bum, MW has a look, then races out of the room, calls for about 4 different people, comes back in with two big crib things, sets them up, then comes back over to me & tells me to start pushing.
5.54 p.m. Daria Rose is born weighing 2.64 kg's, 45 cm's in length, and 32.7 cm head circumferance. They give her to me to hold, but as I still have another baby in me, it's a bit difficult!
5.58 p.m. The OB breaks the waters to twin 2 are and manage to soak everybody. I start pushing but as he isn't coming out fast enough the OB has to pull him out, so I'm glad I had the epi!
6.07 p.m. Alexander Matfeus is born weighing 2.25 kg's, 45 cm's long, and 32.3 cm head circumferance. The funny thing was that he was born covered in vernix which is seen in premmie babies, but Daria wasn't, & they were conceived naturally at the same time, so the midwife couldn't really explain it.
Alexander needed his airways cleared because he was breech, but after that he was fine, then both were given the all-clear by the paediatricians, and Dh & I got to cuddle our little bundles.
Even though I did have an epi, I was totally thrilled to have the natural birth I wanted and I wouldn't have changed anything.
If you got this far, CONGRATULATIONS!! I know it was long, but it felt good finally putting it all down. Thanks for reading.
