inducement because of back pain?

Ok well I will try and make this short. When I was about 27 weeks pregnant I had a fall where I landed on my right hip and stomach, ever since then my whole lower back is screwed. Pain shoots down my legs when I walk, I am on 6 panadeine forte a day which has now been upped even more. I hate the feeling it gives me because all I can do is sleep and I can't look after my daugter like this but if I don't take it then I am in tears becuase the pain is that bad. It also made an old whiplash injury worse and when I went to physio the other day she didn't even want to touch my upper back becuase it was that bad and my lower back she said is going to get even worse, and that they can't do anything but recommend stretches til the baby is born. Basically when I spoke my ob last week I was told regarding inducement that we will cross that bridge when we get to it. Do I have a valid reason to be induced? Any advice would be great! I am also not wanting to be induce til about 36-37 weeks when bub is ready if that changes things.

i know you may not agree but have you thought of an elective c-section. i wouldnt usually say this as i am all for natural births, but i have spinal curvature to 73 degrees. when i gave birth to my first son it was 15 1/2 hours of excruitiating pain. the drs said it was because of my scoliosis and lower back damage. i had elective c-sect for my second son. though i am going to try natural birth with epidural if we conceive again. but i live with constant pain everyday and have for over 15 years now. i understand the agony you must be in!!!! but im sure when 36-37 weeks comes round, if bubs is a healthy weight and size they may induce you. the thing is inductions cause harder faster labours which may aggravate your pain. i was induced with my first son and never want to do that again ( i was also induced for my angel baby) you know your body and your limits. go with what feels right for you. my thoughts are solely on my personal experience and not in any way on proven facts.... good luck...

I think you need to weigh up for yourself what you think is best for you and your family. I wouldn't go straight to an elective c/s, as some labour is best for the baby, and if you find it tough going during labour there are options available to you. It also carries more implications on further labours as you may have restrictions imposed on you.

Do you have friends or family who can help? I know how difficult it is with back pain, I was put on panadeine forte due to sacro-illiac pain which made me seize up one day, but thankfully it got a little better so I could function and the birth went fine. I would take the road of least intervention first and if you find you need more help, take baby steps until you find what you are comfy with. Take care of you xx

I think it's great to get varied advice so to see all different spots on the spectrum of opinions (I will be watching this thread for my own interest too ;)) but in the end, its what is best for you sweety!!
But I must admit that I agree with BellyBelly in taking the course of least intervention (if possible for you) and then go from there................................but whatever the course that is taken to get munchkin out, as long as both you and bubby are H&H at the end, it was the best course of action for you.........whatever it ends up being (if that makes sense! :p )

Thanks heaps for your replies ladies. I'm pretty sure I would be fine for a vaginal delivery, might just have to lay up on the drugs this time round lol. But I feel selfish for wanting an induction, you know? It's harder because both our families are 4 hours away so getting help isn't really possible. Poor DP had the last week off work for me, but only has a couple of weeks left which he is saving up to help for when bub comes. Well I will just weait and see what the ob says. Thanks again :)

It must be terrible to be in so much pain. You've still got quite a while to go before bubs can be safely induced so I hope you can cope alright till then.

I've had back pain during my last PG due to SPD and some days were just horiffic. I know that pain shooting down you leg. Ouch! Stretches and excercises did help but when it's really sore sometimes it's too painful to do them. Just do what you can.

Re: inducing...it will be up to your OB.

I was in agony between my cervix kicks and my SPD and they just shrugged at me and there was no way they would induce early. And now I am glad as Mason already had enough problems at birth and he was only 2 weeks early.

Renee, I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain - huge ((((((HUGS)))))). I'm sure whatever decisions you make are fully justified as no one should have to live with unneccessary pain. However, it sounds like what the OB is saying is that the medical decision can't be taken until closer to the time, so that the best health outcomes are reached (with full compassion for your situation taken into account). So you might just have to wait and see.

The thing I wondered was if regular physio is difficult, does the hospital have a hydrotherapy pool, as you might find that being in water takes the weight off your injury and gives you some relief...? Worth asking about.
