Sometimes they get it quite quickly and don't take long from the first few steps and falling over to being more confident and having less tumbles. At first they still find it quicker to crawl, so often they will drop back down and crawl to whatever it is they want. Others can take a bit longer to get the hang of it and co-ordinate their balance etc. It can be a bit eaiser for them to get the hang of it with no shoes on either - just letting their feet help them grip etc.
My son started standing up from about 7-8 months and from around 9-10 months he was cruising the furniture (walking - so long as he could hold onto something).
We were sure he would be walking by himself by his 1st birthday...
But that was a few weeks ago - and he is confident taking 4-6 steps by himself.... but still feels that crawling will get him to his destination faster.
But every day I see more progress. More confidence. More balance.
As Sherie said - let her walk without shoes or socks as much as possible.
Don't worry about the falls... it helps them to learn balance and confidence. It's hard to say how long it will take for her to walk. I've heard some people say that their children went straight from crawling to walking in one hit. Others needed to 'hold on' to something for months and months. I guess you can encourage her. But also give her independence.
I pity my poor cat when my DS starts walking confidently.
DS only started standing at about 11-12 months, and was walking tentatively at about 14 months.
My DD #2 only started walking at 14 months......now, nearly 16 months she's a champ. But prior to 14 months she had no intention of walking, i honestly dont even think she had the concept of putting one foot infront of the other....she crawled and enjoyed that. Each bubs is different.....
My DD started pulling herself up to standing just after 6 months, and started cruising the furniture not long after. She has been taking 1-2 steps away from the furniture at about 10 months, put she started walking properly this weekend, basically she just got up and walked across the room and has been walking rather than crawling since then.
Caleb has taken up to 4 steps unaided at 9+ months but hasn't progressed much, preferring to crawl about ATM but still doing the walking thing when he feels like playing.
Both his brothers didn't take any unaided steps till over 12 months and then they were off walking constantly.
It's almost like Caleb thinks that now he's taken steps he's not in a rush to go any further and will continue to do stuff in his own time :dunno:
Who knows when you DD will decide to make walking her full time thing ;)
