hydrosalpinx - removal of fallopian tube

hi there

Today i had a scan at day 12 of my second IVF cycle. To my surprise and shock instead of being told when I should expect to trigger they told me to cancel the cycle as I have developed something called hydrosalpinx in my left fallopian tube (something like a toxic fluid sausage is how it was described) which now has to be removed - tube and all. :confused:

Has anyone heard of this before? I had no sign of anything during my first IVF cycle in feb/march. I had a major op for endo last November and one the previous April.

Thanks for any advice or help. I really get a lot out of reading your thoughts and experiences and support of others on BB.

Sorry to say i have had this but they didnt recomend that i cancil cycle. although they did before and said just give IVF a go first. after 5 unsuccessful cycles and a move of FS i finally got it done although by this time they could not remove my tubes but clipped them instead. They say that there is evidence that suggest that this fluid when seeping into the uterus can wash away a growing embie

I to have just been diagnosed as having a hydrosalpinx. All the research that I have done says that a Hydrosalpinx is a collection of fluid in the fallopian tube as a result of a blocked tube. The fine fingers on the end of the fallopian tubes can be injured during surgery or as a result of the endo and then sort of close over, therefore making the fluid accumulate. I questioned why do they remove the tube (as I only have 1 ovary left and of course it is the the ovary that has the blocked tube going to it) and why they don't try and unblock it, and was told that they have very poor success rates with the surgery and have basically stopped doing it because women were still not able to fall pregnant and needed the tube removed therfore delaying any other TTC stuff.

They also say that the fluid that does accumulate in the tube is hostile to an embryo therefore increasing you chances of not concieving or miscarriage. There are lots of studies around that were mainly done overseas which actually back this up. So that is why they are now opting to remove the tube before any other ttc stuff (ie IVF) happens so it will increase your likelihood of falling pregnant.

As you can see I have done my research and I am also now waiting to have my tube reoved before starting IVF. Hope this helps

It really does help.

They wanted me to cancel as I only had 4 follicles (same as last cycle) even after 12 days on a high level of Gonal F.
My poor ovaries just don't seem to respond that well to either Puregon or Gonal F. Probally the result of endo and ops.

I had a hydrosalpinx removed last monday. I had an ectopic pregnancy 20 y ago in the r fallopian tube near the end of tube. 15 y ago I underwent a neo salpingostomy (opening of tube) I didn't have a left tube or ovary (congenital). Over the past few years I have experienced periodical pain and inter menstrual spotting and finally had the hydrosalpinx diagnosed (mostly believing it was ovarian cysts, which seemed to co incide). I have never fallen pregnant since the ectopic and obviously the salpingostomy was not successful. Due to my age (45) attempt at repairing the hydrosalpinx was not considered and I felt that removal was the best option to relieve the pain and given the success rate - the percentage change of ever falling pregnant naturally is so low that IVF is the perferred option. I didnt want to chance an unsuccessfull repair and take the chance of developing another hydrosalpinx at a later date. its only been a week and the microsurgery has taken a little longer than I expected to recover, mostly from the CO2 they use. But all is well. Hope this helps.

I had hydrosalphinx clipped almost 2 years ago to the day tomorrow... mid way through my 1st IVF cycle ... unsuccessful then though not for the hydrosalphinx tube being clipped -just luck of the draw...

I had my done via laproscopy and I was fine the next day or so.Then I started stimming injections.They were going to cancel the cycle but I was able to get in to see Gynae and she fitted me at short notice. I wanted to continue since I was okay.

I have hydrosalpinges (both tubes).Hydrosalpinx is when the tube is blood filled.Pyosalpinx is when the tube is filled with pus.Hydrosalpinx is greek.Hydro "water" salpinx "trumpet".It is caused by Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID),chlamydia,or gonorrhea.I did not know if I ever had any of that.You can have some abdominal pain.I did not.I had a hysterosalpingography test.Laparoscopic salpingectomy is the surgery to remove the tube.Often it is just called salpingectomy (from my reserch).Laparoscopic it the way the doctor does the surgery.Without the surgery a woman with this can live a normal full life.There is a large chance a baby will not result.My doctor said he would not say it could not happen.He said he seen some crazy things happen.I have done lots of reserch on this.I am afraid.I have not set a surgery date.I do know I want to have the surgery.Thank you.

Help. I have been TTC for 2 years now. I went to a Fertility Clinic a few months ago. I had my bloods tested for a moth and my doc said that it was my hormones and prescribed puregon but before i could start i needed to get my rubella injection again as sometimes it doesnt last or just doesnt take. I also was told that my blood type is o- and to be careful of bleeding during pregnancy. So hopes up got my rubella and finally started puregon 2 weeks ago my doc also wanted me to get the HSG just incase. So nearly reaching ovulation went in for ultrasound all good until yesterday my doc rang to tell me i have hydrosalpinx! How? How long have i had it? I have to have Laproscopy to remove the damaged tubes! For about 5 years now i have had a vaginal dischage and have had tests from a few different doctors who couldnt tell me what was happening, is this it? Im so sad im 34 with no babies :( Going to see the doc tomorrow. How did i get this?

I am so sorry thats has happened to you.I had my surgery at the end of October.I just had my post op November 23rd.I start IVF after Christmas.I asked my doctor about a million questions and looked up some things online.This whole thing is scary.Being told "you are not alone" does not help.I know.If you have any questions for me (a person who has gone threw the surgery and done tons of reserch) please feel free to ask.

DP has a friend whose sister had this in both tubes. They had many many rounds of IVF before it was diagnosed and she had both her tubes removed. She fell pregnant the first IVF round after surgery, after a record-breaking (for her) EPU and her best ever embie rates (there are a bunch on ice, her little boy, who is now about 5 months old, was the fresh transfer). She had (i think) chlamydia-induced PID in her teens but it was promptly treated, she had no idea the infection had lingered until now.

I hope this brings hope. It sounds like such a scary prospect, to lose one's tubes when one is so desperately trying for a baby, but with this condition it can really make a huge difference to success rates.

I the other day was told after ttc for 1 year that i have hydrosalpinx (both tubes) and that i have to get them removed and start ivf! I had my appendix out and also had an abcess etc when i was younger which has caused my hydrosalpinx due to infection. I was so upset and am still coming to terms with it and how i wont be able to conceive naturally. I, too have lots of watery discharge and this my obst stated was a prime example of someone suffering with hydrosalpinx. However, my obstetrician is so positive about ivf and it is a fifty percent chance each cycle so the odds are VERY good! I am trying to stay positive. I am on the waiting list to get my tubes clipped or removed and then start ivf. Good luck with everything, i hope everything works out for u :)
