How to tell baby's position breech or vertex?

At my last ob appointment my little fella was head down bum up but not engaged.
I am just shy of 37 weeks and woke up yesterday to find my cheeky little monkey laying sideways (I did not think there would still be room)!
This morning he is definitely back to being vertical but I am unsure as to whether he is head down.
He has not had the hiccups today yet so I have not been able to work it out (usually hiccups are well down). It still feels like there is an octopus in there and I am not so great at discerning what is a kick or a punch at the best of times!
How else might I tell? Is the head or the bum harder?
If he is head up is there any particular point of "no return" ie when one should be resigned to bubs being breech?

There is a great site called spinning babies. www.spinningbabies.com Go on there and have a look. Basically if bub is head up you will be able to feel that hard round ball, bub's head. I always knew where Noah was, he was persistantly breech my whole pregnancy.

The head is definitely harder. Although having said that I still found it difficult to tell only cos I was afraid to push and prod as hard as midwife or doc did...lol.

Find the highest up lumpy bit and push it to one side. Pushing a bum will make most of the baby move because it's part of the body, pushing a head will not because the neck flexes. You can also do similar at the bottom of your bump, just above your pubic bone, or get dh to do it (you can feel better but he can probably reach better) dig your finger and thumb in until you can feel bubs, like the midwife does to check engagement, and wiggle side to side (i used the 1st 2 fingers on each hand actually, one on each side of her head). Again, doing this to the bum moves much of bubs, doing it to a head only moves the head.

If you are not hurting you, you are not hurting bubs, so dont worry. ;)
