Skipping the cot stage altogether

It looks like we'll be skipping the cot stage completely as we are still co-sleeping in the one bed all together. Thinking though we'd soon like to introduce him to his own bed which means we'll not even bother with going to the cot stage. How young is too young for them to go in to a bed? and is it the logistics of them falling off or is it more the emotional thing of the baby being in a larger surface area alone? I'm not too concerned about that because for all his naps he sleeps in a queen bed alone and he's fine with that so long as we lay with him until he falls alseep.

We put DD1 into her own bed at around 13 months as she had thrown up so much in her cot I just wanted to burn it! She was fine. We had her in a top bunk on the floor which was perfect as it had the railing up so she couldn't fall out.

They look to cute all little in a big bed!

This is a bit off topic, but i have a question... when you co-sleep, does your sexlife go out the door completely?

ours doesnt catherine.... makes no diff.... i mean who only does it in the bed and at night time.. IYKWIM?

Ours has Catherine and it is one little reason we'd like him to go in to a bed sometime in the next year. I really don't like doing *it* out of our bed so we rarely do.

So how does a toddler bed differ from a normal bed? is this the sort of small bed that comes in a shape like a car, ive seen them, but wasn't sure if it was just for show.

Ourlux - i'm no expert, but our cot converts into a toddler bed... it's just smaller than a single bed and also has a small rail so they can't fall out of bed but can climb in and out.

Ah i see, in that case, we'll have to go straight to a single because one of us needs to lie with him and hold him to sleep, that wouldn't be possible in such a small bed.

Ourlux, we moved DD to a bed when she was 2, she was still happy in her cot we just wanted her to get used to a bed before DS arrived. we bought her a bed rail that locks attached to the mattress, stopped her from falling out, but she was stil able to get out of the bed if she needed to ..

Lux - Tallon has been in his own bed for a few months. We used a cot for about the first 6 months, then he co-slept with us.. (and still does a lot of the time.. especially in these cold nights! LOL) but he went straight to a single bed with rails on both sides with no probs (coming into us when he woke) Same as you, during the day he slept on his own in our queen bed, so there was no probs with him feeling lost in a 'big' bed. And also I need to lie down with him to get him to sleep, so the cot quickly became a no go. So it's packed up waiting for the new bub.. even then, we might co-sleep from the get go this time, so might skip the cot altogether! hehe.

We basically got him a big bed when we were confident he could climb down off it safely.

Ashy moved into a big bed just before she was 18 months cause she climed out of the cot!
Her uncle owns his own bed making business and made her a beautiful four poster single bed which will last her for years and years. We got one of the side rails from
K-Mart and that did the job perfectly until she was about 3.
I used to lay in bed with her for 5 - 10 mins til she fell asleep when she first moved into the big bed but she was fine after that :)

My DD went straight from her basinet into a bed at 6 months. She has never fallen out of the bed (which is adjustable and lower to the ground than normal bed). I think it just depends on the child.

My four month old has recently gone from her bassinet to a single bed size futon on the floor. She co-sleeps with us for the second half of the night, but sleeps on her futon for her day sleeps and the first half of the night.

The futon is next to the wall and has a mat next to it in case she rolls off. So far, no rolling off though. I don't really see the point of a cot myself; when she goes into her own room we'll make sure her room is safe and put a baby gate on her door.

both my boys were in big beds before their first birthdays. for some reason they both 'hated' the cot. i bought a guard rail, put bed against the wall and had a spare mattress on the floor 'incase' they fell out. which never happened.
