Poliosis - white hair patches

I am noticing an increasing ammount of pure white patches of hair on Tehya's head. They are only on the right side, the first is around the size of a 20 cent coin above her right ear and the rest - another 3 patches are on the back of her head.

I asked the hairdresser what this was a couple of weeks ago and she told me basically it was just that Tehya had no melanin in this hair resulting in no colour at all. This hair is very white and I guess it looks whiter because the rest of her hair is quite red.

I have done lots of searching on the web and have found out that it is call "Poliosis" unfortunately I haven't really been able to find out much more about it. I do know that it can be linked to other diseases though. The last time I was at my GP's and I asked him about it he brushed me off and told me it was just from where she slept. WTF, I'm not that stupid, she isn't bald there. Anyway, should I go back and get a referal to a Paed to get it checked out further?

Does anyone know anything more about this?

I don't now much about it but..... I have a friend who has had a patch of pure white hair for as long as I have known him... he is mid twenties....

hope you can find some answers...

I had a guy friend recently, with a number of white patches.. same thing.. he mentioned I think that you can get more and more as you get older.. but.. who knows.. I dont see how it could hurt to get it checked out though..

Wow Trish I didn't realise it could be link to dieases...!! I too have a male friend who has pure white hair in a large patch and also some of his eyelashes... it also affects his skin in that area too. He is italian so it is reeealy noticable! But is purfectly healthy tho, no diseases.
