22 month old having 'venting' sessions

Hi all

I called these 'venting' sessions but I really don't know what they are!!

My 22 month old son is going through a stage where he will be playing quite happily, and then all of a sudden just squeal and hit out at his toys, the furniture or throw things etc.

It's not malicious as such, he is not hitting us or his little brother, but to watch him it is almost like something has just built up and he just has to let go of pent up energy or emotion or something.

I have no idea what it is, or how to deal with it.

I have tried telling him off and timing him out, to no avail. I am no ignoring it also to no avail.

We are also having sleep issues, see my other post in this section. I don't know if the two could be related?

Anyone been through this??

DS gets frustrated sometimes when he is playing, if he cant get a toy around the corner etc, or it gets stuck, and cries and kicks and gets upset. His is not related to sleeping, but if your DS is tired during the day, then it might bepushing hie tolerance thresholds down?

Does he speak a lot? Maybe it will change as he can vocalise more and tell you what the issues are? I've been told that about my son, so I'm hoping its true!

Funnily enough I was just dealing with exactly the same thing. DD (also 22 months) got angry at her crayons and started to throw them and hit the table. I gave her a warning and said, If you throw them again I will pack them away. She was OK for a couple of minutes and then did it again. So I packed away her crayons and we went and did something else. She cried for a couple of seconds then was fine.

I think being tired has a lot to do with it. (Haven't read your other post yet) They get a lot more easily frustrated. DD is only behaving like this at the moment cause she has a cold. So hopefully once the sleeping is sorted out, things will get a lot better.
