When our new baby arrives Ds will be 15-16mths old. We have a leeway period of 3mths while bub is in our room to transition him into a toddler bed as this is our last baby and I cant justify buying a second cot for what would only be a few months.
Im just worried that 15mths old is too young for a toddler bed. How old was your child when you put them in a toddler bed and what did you do to make the transition easier for them?

Anna, there are a few threads on this already if you do a search. We moved Jack into a proper single bed (with a bed rail) at 16 months for the same reason as you, except we did it before the baby arrived to make sure he didn't feel that the baby had pushed him out of his cot (and his room as he moved rooms too). We had no problems at all although we did spend a few days preparing him for the change.
I remember from some of the other threads that many people have done it around that age, both to toddler beds and single beds, so it is certainly not too early.
I will be in a similar situation. My DS will be exactly 18 months wen #2 arrives. We have already bought him a car bed (with raised sides) so we will get him into that when he is about 15-16 months old.

From what I can gather, I think children adapt quite well... most of the time.

My DD was 16 months old when we put her in a big bed for the same reason - new baby coming and couldn't justify having two cots.
She went into a kingsize single and we put one of those guardrails on the side (you can get them at Kmart, Target etc for about $30-60). We took her shopping to buy special sheets etc but I think in hindsight she was probably a bit little to bother with that.
Initially we had a few issues with her getting out of bed which we got around by putting a toddler gate on her bedroom door. We didn't want to close the door on her but we didn't want her wandering around the house when we were asleep either. The gate worked well, she fell asleep on the floor next to it a couple of times but it was really only a matter of about a week and she was sleeping in the bed fine. We took the guardrail off when she was about 2 and she's never fallen out.
She's always been a very good sleeper though anyway so I think that definitely contributed to the smooth transition.

We are going to be moving DD into a bed at about 19mths (baby on the way when she is 21mths), i was thinking if she didn't cope too well i could just put the mattress on the floor and we could do that for a couple of months, getting her used to it. Its just an idea that i had... My DD will be going into a Queen bed, i cant justify buying a single. We have family come to stay and it comes in handy, she can just have a sleep over in the lounge room for those occasions...

my middle son was in a big bed at 16 months.. no reason except I moved the cot and well...
I never bothered with bedrails.. We always just put the cot mattress on the floor beside the bed and put one or two rolled up towels on one side of the bed under the mattress.
my eldest in a bed at 2.5yrs and my youngest at 20 months...
Also the toddler beds have small rails...
my oldest was in a single bed from about 14 mths - I just put a mattress beside the bed.
He was the kind who would stay in bed when told though.
