Anyone travelled Eastern Europe - with/without kids???

Hello all

We are heading off on our 6 week jaunt in a couple of weeks with the kids. Because I am a super super organised person (the type who hates to get caught out ;)) I am in the process of finalising what stuff I need to take for the kids.

What I am really after is any info from anyone who has been to places like Hungary/Croatia/Czech Republic/Slovak Republic...I know it is going to sound pedantic but I am trying to work out how many packets of nappies/wipes etc I need to take ie are they easily bought over there? (ALex has always has had bowel and diarohhea sp? issues so I really need to make sure that I have enough or can get them easily).

Also as we are doing a lot of travelling and not in the one place a lot I was planning on taking some "snacks" with me that I know the kids are guaranteed to eat if we are desperate - like rusks/sultanas/vegemite. Do you think I am being overly prepared?

I have been to Croatia many times but just not with kids so I cannot remember what is easy to buy and what isnt!

I was in Eastern Europe about 5 years ago. I did it when I was single. If you are in main towns I would say that you shouldn't have a problem. If your going out of the main towns, then maybe stock up before heading off. I think Tesco was one of the major supermarkets in Europe.

Thanks Lara, I suppose if like you said I take enough to get me through the "villages" (where we will be spending half our time), then I can just restock in the main towns.

I went to Prague and all I can remember is I had a really yummy and cheap roast chicken dinner....good for kids!! Apart from that I say it is always good to take the snack items no matter where you go.
I do remember that we were always able to buy things from supermarkets in all the main towns over there. HaVE fun! xo

I've never been to croatia but i've been to slovakia, the czech republic and hungary. The villages probably won't have nappies and wipes - most people use cloth out there, but you'll have no worries in the cities. The only trouble you might have is figuring out what is in packets in hungary - hungarian is like NOTHING else as it's one of the few european languages which is not from latin or slovak origins. Spoken it sounds like one of the native american languages (an american of choktaw descent told me), so get a good guide/phrase book.

Prague is getting more and more expensive now as so many western europeans are going there, bratislava is less so (but it's not as nice, lol). Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities on earth - the glory of the Russian Empire crumbling away with time and neglect like the face of an aging beauty queen. Very moving, take lots of pics. Oh and take your kids to the cave museum under the hill - they'll remember it forever! :)

Thanks for that info Hoobley...we are going to Budapest and I have heard so much about it, it sounds fantastic- thanks for the tips on the caves too.

I kindof fugured that the villages wouldnt stock nappies etc, I think I will try and fit as many into my suitcases before we leave here as possible. :D As usual I will be overweight too - I can never travel light.
