Massive Blood Loss At 13 Weeks Pregnant

Hi there,
I am new to Belly Belly so please forgive me if I've not posted correctly.

I am now near enough 14 weeks pregnant, and on Monday 13th August, following a general cleaning of home and moving furniture around etc, sat down to have coffee, and out of the blue, there was a 'whoosh' down below, followed by another 2/3 'whooshes' immediately afterwards.
At first I thought it might be urine as having had vaginal deliveries before, the muscles aren't quite as strong as they used to be. Or maybe it was 'water' leaking from the sac, even though I felt it was a bit soon in pregnancy for that.
Anyway I put my hand on my trouser leg, and to my horror it was blood.
I ran upstairs, and on arriving at the bathroom, I noticed that my trousers were absolutely soaked in blood right down to the hems. Even the bathroom carpet is blood-stained, which I'm sure gives some idea as to the severity of the blood loss.
I was taken to hospital by ambulance as not allowed to travel by car, but was allowed home later same day as bleeding was only like a heavy period by then.
Since then it has been sort of spotting one day and mild period like following day.
Today however, the blood loss is very, very minimal and is a dark brown colour, and does not even drip onto pad any more, its only when I wipe myself now.
I have not passed any clots, just thought i'd add this.
I had a scan but as it was unexpected, I hadn't drank the pint of water beforehand, so the sonographer could only guess in a way.
There was a heartbeat and baby was very active I'm glad to say, but the sonographer sort of hinted that the placenta is close to the cervix, but didn't actually confirm that as bladder was empty and in the way.
Can anybody please advice me here, as naturally worried sick in case I miscarry.
I did miscarry last August at 6 weeks, but the blood loss was very minimal then, hardly anything at all really, so things are very different this time.

Jay Jay - Sorry to hear about all of what you are going thru. So glad that you still have a heartbeat and your baby is still active. When I first saw your post I thought OMG, it must not have ended great, I now have a sigh of relief. If the sack is very low and you have previously m/c before I would not do heavy cleaning or lifting or even the vaccuuming until you have the all clear from your Dr's that it is safe to do so. Unlike you I had a m/c after my water breaking at 16wks. I was watching waterboy at the time and felt a pop, thinking that it didn't sound right, especially knowing as well what water breaking felt like, I knew it wasn't a good pop. I had been spotting all day (just to add as well b4 water break) As I stood up, I knew then that it was definately my waters. By the time we got to the hospital which would have been around 15min-20min, I had haemorriged which had resulted in a blood transfusion. After a second m/c after that one, I was advised by my Dr when I was pregnant again to not vacuum, mop, etc just in case. More or less take it easy. This is my advice to you. as well as having another U/S to check on the baby and position of placenta again, if that will help put your mind at ease.

Jay Jay - welcome to BellyBelly, I am sorry you have something frightening to introduce yourself with.

There is an article on the main site that talks about different reasons for bleeding which may or may not help, you can find it here. I agree with taking it easy, especially if it's thought your placenta is low down. I'd probably avoid sex until it's confirmed too. Let us know how you go, its great news that bubby is there and active and that the bleeding has stopped - hang in there and we'd love to know how you go with your scan.

I agree with the others. Take things very easy, rest as much as you can. No sex or heavy physical work. It is a very good sign that your baby is still active and ha a heart beat.

So sorry to read about the little angels that you have miscarried, such a terrrible terrible loss isn't it, though anybody who has never experienced it, won't quite understand what it's like.

I shall deffo keep you informed as soon as I know what's happening - so far have not been able to get hold of midwife, so shall phone again on Monday, I will have to see a midwife anyway as need to check blood pressure as that was sky high and hospital dr quite concerned.

I'm so glad I've found this site, sorry I don't easily find my way around as yet, and thankyou for moving my post to the pregnancy board.

Still passing some dark brown 'old' blood and early this morning there was a sort of 'clot' as well.

Can anybody tell me if a 'clot' of dark brown old blood is just like passing a bright red fresh blood 'clot'.

I was told that to pass dark brown old blood was a good sign, but not so sure since I saw this 'clot' this morning. Glad to say there's been no loss at all since.

JayJay, I hope you are doing okay and resting as much as possible. I hope you can get in to see the midwife tomorrow and that all is ok.

It's strange that midwife hasn't turned up on home visit actually, makes me wonder if she's off on holiday? Anyway shall find out tomorrow whether she's around or not, cos if she isn't I'm gonna have to ask to see whoever else is coverinig for her while she's off.
Yes I am behaving myself...........its soooo difficult though, I wish I could learn to knit or something else that I could learn quickly and easily, boredom is getting to me atm, I am so fed up of just being sat here like a lemon just staring at the walls!

Now that you have found this site, you may find that your on here alot more, than what you had expected. It becomes an addiction. (lol) TC

JayJay - Hope all is going well! I had quite a few bleeds early on & was on bed-rest orders a couple of times. It is boring - I know!! I became very acquainted with all the daytime TV (groan! - I could plan my day by what time the shows were on). I did use it as a time to catch up on some reading... but, as csab has said - I spent LOTS of time on BellyBelly (hehe - I loved the days when DH left his laptop at home for me & I could lie in bed, searching the forums!!)

I hope these eases your mind but I had bleeding very similar to yours at 15 weeks where I was standing in a pool of blood tmi, I was one minute talking to a co-worker about my obst then all of a sudden a warm sensation and that. I visited my obst straight away that found a heart beat and all was ok after a few days further of brown blood. On the ultrasound they could see a black area where they said the haemorage was coming from.
I wish you all the best as everyone has said stay calm and hopefully have some time to put your feet up.

Once again thanks so much for your kind words and advice, its very reassuring - and like you say, yes this site is addictive!! So glad I found you.

Have just phoned the drs and mw was actually in the building, although she has no clinic on Mondays.

She hasn't phoned back, so she may well be on her home visits today and may have decided to call here later.

The dark brown blood has gone, and there is almost nothing at all now, no dripping whatsoever, tbh its more to do with my paranoia, so in a way I actively 'look' for it iyswim. There have been one or two more 'clots', if that's what they really are.

They are certainly not like the clots when I miscarried last year, these are merely blood 'spots' (more 'solid' in a way so not runny,) if that makes sense to anybody?
I wonder if they are classed as 'clots' though?.........omg its such a cruel mind game isn't it.

Anyway enough of me, me, me, how r u lot doing? Hope all is well and life is being kind to you, thanks for the lovely site.

Being able to 'communicate' with people in the same boat is a great help in itself, isn't it. Lovely to hear success stories from those of you who've had 'nasty' bleeds in pregnancy and gone on to have your healthy, bouncing little babies at the end of the day. Fingers crossed eh. xx

PHEW.............Midwife has just phoned me, and went up the wall as she knew nothng about it - hospital had not informed her in other words!

I told her everything that's been going on in the last week, including the 'clot's passed now. She was not too concerned about me passing dark brown 'strands' of clots as she says its old blood anyway - but having said that she is hoping that it will clear up real soon, as she would much rather me not passing any clots at all.

Anyway, I am going to see her in clinic on Wendesday, and she will have arranged another scan for me in the meantime.

To say she sounded shocked is an understatement....bless her!!

As we live in a rural area she's been our midwife since first got preggers with dd 1- so in a way we've become pretty close over the almost 8 years she's been an important part the lives of dh and myself.........oh and all the babas too!!

Have to say, I am sooooooooo relieved after having a word with her.......she's been a midwife for the best part of 30 years so she has vast amount of exprience under her belt.

Sorry for rambling on, its just that I'm on a high!!!!!!!!!! Oh so relieved.

ROLL ON WEDNESDAY.............Just can't wait to get to midwife's appointment on Wednesday.............much easier to discuss these things face to face isn't it...........so glad I've had a word with her though........much happier now that she's told me not to worry too much.
