GD Testing
hello everyone
just wondering what the glucose test is like? i'm scared i will be sick or pass out or something from all that sugar.. is this possible? should i take my dh along with me when i go?
did any of you have any bad side effects with this test?? i have to go some time this week and i keep putting it off :(

It's not really a huge amount of sugar, you'd get just as much drinking a 500ml bottle of softdrink...I just felt really really hungry afterwards.

Hi Sirenz
I'm having mine done on the 28th. You'll be fine with the test. I work in a Diabetes Dept of a hospital and all our patients do this test monthly and they are Diabetic and they dont have any side effects. I've heard it tastes pretty bad though so it will be interesting to be on the flip side this time.

There are two types of test - one involves fasting and the other doesn't. I had the fasting one and felt quite ill from the fasting, but felt better after having the glucose drink (but still hungry LOL). I have a friend who felt a bit ill after having the drink, but the staff were very attentive and kind and asked her if she wanted to lie down in a spare room. She did and felt much better. So please don't worry, you will be fine, and if you do feel a bit off, just let them know.

the drink did make me feel quite sleepy and a bit dizzy but nothing serious.. i was by myself and was fine

Hello,
I have had both tests, fasting and other, after the first one I was fine, the second fasting test, I had a bad night before which might have contributed but I was sleepy, the staff were very attentive also and set me up in a spare room for a nap in between tests. which was great as the time flew by then.
I didnt have anyone with me, but went and had something to eat straight away, you might want to take some food with you, before you starting driving incase you feel weak from the fasting.
goodluck

Hey Sirenz,
I have had the fasting test. It really wasn't that bad.. the drink used to be horrible but it's now like sweet lemonade... It's not that bad at all. I felt really tired after drinking it and laid in a bed in an empty exam room for the 2 and a bit hours I was there. It was fine. Having the one drink, one blood test, no fasting this week...

Its not really that scary.. well I didnt think it was. I did my glucose test during a routine appt with midwife. I went in, drnk the sugary drink which i thought was like very sweet lemonade, and then my midwife did all the usual things for the appointment - BP, listened to bub on the doppler etc. Then I went out into the waiting area and read a trashy magazine until the hour was up, and then I went into the room next door where they took some blood. I didnt need to fast in the morning before the test, but I obviously couldnt eat aanything during the hour. All they told me was to eat my usual breakfst but try to not have anything overly sweet before the test. I did feel a bit yuk while I was drinking the sweet drink and for a couple of minutes afterwards, but I wasnt sick.

Goodluck with your test.
I did the one hour test and ended up feeling pretty sick from the drink - I lasted 40 minutes and then it all came back up. I felt really off and dizzy for the rest of the day aswell. To me it tasted like straight cordeal - it was very disgusting.

Hi Sirenz,
I had the GD test about 2 weeks ago, and i drank the glucose water, which tastes like lemonade x 10 in regards to the sweetness of it, i asked how much sugar was in it and the nurse said 50mg...
After i drank it i sat in their recliner for an hour and i fell asleep! It made me super sleepy, but not nauseas or anything :)
You'll be fine, its seriously nothing! Get it done! :)

I didn't get to do the drink test (I did take a photo of it though, lol - glucaid on Flickr - Photo Sharing! )
I ended up doing the fasting blood test which wasn't terrible but I was very hungry!
