Losec - please help
All i can say is thankgod for Belly belly..:wall:
I took 8 wk old DS back to dr today and he has prescibed Losec (10mg) for him. He told me to speak to the chemist in regards to giving it to him. First of all the chemist said to give it to him whole.. then said crush it on a spoon and give it all at once. From what i can tell from this forum, Losec shouldnt be crushed. Does anyone have any advice? I am from a small country town so don't have another chemist i can ask and Dr seemed unsure as well..

Nope Losec definitely shouldn't be crushed from what my Drs have said. The way I used to do it was to put it in a syringe then draw some water up into it, just enough for it to dissolve. There are some places that can make it into a liquid, but sounds like where you are it's not going to be an option.
I always did 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night, is that what your doctor recommended as well? Or all at once? Also it's best to make sure you give it to bub 1/2 an hour before a feed so it has time to start working.
HTH :)

Thankyou so much girls. How much water? Just a little bit?
And should it be given at any particular time, ie before feed or after? The chemist really was clueless and the doctor was extremly thorough but hadnt really used losec before

Bub needs to have the Losec around 1/2 an hour before the feed so it has time to start working.
When I dissolved Zander's I just used a tiny amount of water otherwise it was a struggle to get him to take the lot. 1-2ml at the most I used, but it's trial & error to what bub can handle. If he prefers more liquid do that, if he can handle it with less then that's fine also.
I'd check with your Dr as well whether to do it all at once because it may wear off before the night feeds if you do it in the morning IYKWIM. That's why we did half in the morning then half at night so it covered the whole day/night.

Hey
There is a few things you can dp one would be t disolve the full tablet in some water and syringe it in to the bubs mouth, the other option is to get the losec from a compunding pharmacy so they can make it into a liquid for you
As for the dose did the dr tel you the 10mg all at one or to spilt it 5mg twice a day, the reason i ask is becuase I know alot of people find babies do better on 2 doses, for some reason its seems to where of quicker in bubs than adults
Good luck
By the way losec can take about 2 weeks to take ful efect, dont be disheartned if you dont see an imediate reaction

The dr didn't give me any instructions on dosage, just said ask chemist. The two doses of half tablet sounds good though. Do i keep giving him gaviscon? i have been using this over the last week to try to stop some vomiting

is the gavison the sachets you put you either mix with bm as a thickener or put in his bottles if so thats fine
if its the liquid ant acid one its also fine but need to be given an hour away from the losec

Hi there, all the girls have given you some good advice.
I just wanted to add that you are definately right do not crush the tablet, though you can between two spoons crush it slightly, the orange or yellow colour stuff can be crushed it is the small beads that can't be. IF it was me and I had a tablet, I would place half the tablet in the syringe (a neurofen one works good or a 20 ml syringe from the chemist...they have a wider hole) and then draw up 5 ml of water, leave it about 30 seconds and then give it a good shake.
You can draw up a little bit more air so that it has a place to slosh around. then administer this, repeat in the pm.
For the tablet 30 mins before a feed is best and also like Amy has said if you can find someone who will compound it for you, it is best for babies, she would only need 2.5ml twice a day and not as much of a pain. And also it may take about 2 weeks to notice a difference, so hopefully it will be sooner.
The losec will not stop the vomiting though, it may decrease the amount, but it will only decrease the acid content.
Good luck.

Any tips on how i can stop him from spitting it out when i give it to him?

I used to put the syringe to the side of his mouth, sort of in his check & tried to get it as far to the back as he could handle.

sorry cant help you there, we cheat and tube it, im hopeless when it comes to children that take meds and eat oraly
have you tried a spoon, or one of the med dummies sorry if it sill idea LOL i said i have no clue

Lie them down, like on a change table, squeeze his cheeks gently so that it opens his mouth and try and trickle it down the side of his cheek do it slowly, sometimes a thin syringe works better.
They do eventually get used to it, especially when it starts working and they are not in pain.

we use a 3ml syringe and dh cut the end bit off so its flat ( but not sharp) syringe the dissolved tab into mouth sometimes in 2 or 3 goes and use a sterile small container ready with a bit more cooled (tempid) boiled water and syringe up 2nd dose of just water to get the rest out of syringe and washes taste out of mouth and have dummy or breast ready to go straight in, at first dh had to help but now got routine down pat. Hope this helps.
