back pain?
hey guys, I'm 21 weeks into my 3rd pgcy and in the last 2 days have started getting this really bad back pain on my right hand side, it slowly got worse through the day until it got so bad I was shaking and felt very faint (no fever) I took panadol which took the edge off and thought if it's not better in the morning I'm ringing my ob. At first I thought it might be my kidney but as I had no other signs like fever, vomiting, burning urin I wasn't too worried just in alot of pain. It hasn't gone away but it's bare able most of the time but worse at night as i wake up with it. I had my ob appt today and he pressed my kidney's there was no pain or inflamation and he suggested if I get any other syptoms go straight to the gp and get a midstream test ....anyway to cut a long story long  I'm still left with this back pain and no answers?? nothing relieves it not hot packs or baths infact when I rub the area on my back it doesn'tfeel tender at all?? anyone got any ideas? or had a simular experience?

Hey Tiff
it could be from your baby pushing up into your ribcage or diapragm and causing referred pain to the back :) I sympathise, as I experienced this with both of my pregnancies.
I had 2 sources of comfort...reflexolgy and yoga
you could try this:
Adhomukha Virasana (Downward facing hero pose)
A position in which the forehead is resting reduces stress, calms the nervous system, and softens the mind. Helps to relieve nausea and fatigue.
• Sit back on your heels, big toes together, and knees slightly wider than your hips
• Extending out through your back, attempting to keep your buttocks sitting on your heels, stretch the arms forward and move the torso towards the floor ( as pregnancy advances use a chair to fold the arms, to create more space for your growing belly)
• Keep the arms shoulder width, spread the fingers, flattening the palms
• Rest the forehead to the floor (or forearms if using a chair)
you can also do this with the arms extending up a wall, close enough so you can rest your forehead to the wall
this really helps to open up the ribcage and alleviate pressure, plus encourage the bub to move
hope you get some relief soon

Ohh Natalie thank you so much I will do the hero pose and let you know. Now that you mention it the baby is sitting on my right hand side, head up near my rib cage bum around my lower pelvis exactly where the pain is coming from. You wonder how such a sweet little thing can cause so much pain.

OMG! I have temporary relief If I have to stay on all 4's for the next 3 months I will! I did the pose a few times and found as soon as I put my butt on my heals and opened my knees I got instant relief I also found when I was on all 4's attempting to get up it also worked so I lent my forhead to the floor also and it was sooo nice thank you thank you thank you!

Hey Tiff
thats great...just be careful not to stretch to much, and cause a muscle strain or hyperextension injury ok :)
I have a free download of the pose on my web...pregnancy yoga page, scroll down to the bottom

Ohh cool thanks I checked it out! I had to take a break every few minutes so the blood didn't rush to my head but it was such a relief. With the major pain gone I'm able to pinpoint where it's coming from easierand it seams it's my lower back mainly on the right side, probably why opening my knees realy got results. I'm going to try and find a pregnancy yoga class near me

TENS for back pain
I had the same problem and used a combination of yoga, labour tens and massage. TENS is safe and natural -you can hire or buy online and also use it for birth. Good luck.
