How to avoid toddler waking up soaked each morning from overflowing overnight nappy?!

lately, my 16mth old DS has been having a BIG drink of water with his dinner and then some milk before bed (which is fine, he's not a huge drinker during the day, so i am glad he drinks in the evening)..... he'll go to bed at about 7pm and wake up anywhere between 6am-7am. when he wakes up, his pyjamas are usually soaked through with wee.... his nappy is just overflowing. i was wondering about tips on how to avoid this! one, to save on washing and two, because i think that maybe it's also waking him up in the morning? he used to sleep in till 7.30am but now typically wakes at 6.15am or so.... maybe he wakes to the wet and cold?

i use Aldi nappies and they are the right size for him - i have had absolutely no troubles with them in the past 16mths, or during the day. it's just the overnight nappy that of course doesnt get changed for 12 or so hours.

do you think i should try different nappies? or can you use a nappy cover?? there's probably a simple logical solution to this (besides changing the nappy overnight of course!) but i just cant see it!!

have you considered a nighttime cloth nappy? otherwise try a fleece cover, i do this the odd occasion DD wears a sposies opposed to a cloth to bed, stops any potential leaks!!

Maybe try to adjust his drinking schedule? Encourage the big drinks in the morning, and make the supper time drinks a little smaller. (I know the feeling though, of just being happy they are drinking - my girls don't take in as much as I think they should, either.)
And if that's not working, try giving him a clean nappy when you go to bed. Then at least you don't have to get up to do it, and he gets a few more dry hours, hopefully!

I had a friend that once recommended using a home brand pad in the overnight nappy during the heavy wet stage. Some kids have it worse than others.

This might sound dumb, but why not change him before you go to bed? By that time the dinner drinks would be in the diper already and then he has a "new" diper for the rest of the night.
I change my dd just before I get into bed and yes she does wake up, but she is soooo sleepy that she nods of very quickly.

Only thing i can suggest is what my sister suggested to me, as Jesse's always been a BIG night time wee'er. Is put a cloth nappy, even if its just a terry one, over the top of the disposable. I havent done it as such, i should, as Jesse wets 2 out of 5 nights, but it worked for her kids.

I had this trouble too til i started using mcn at night time with a fleece cover, haven't had a leak since! If you arent keen on cloth nappies maybe just buy a fleece cover and put it over the disposable, i reckon that'd work

I don't have many ideas but you could try putting in a mcn bolster pack in his nappy to try and give some extra absorbency.

Have you tried changing the brand of nappy?
I used Huggies and have never had a problem (except the occassional Super Poo Up The Back!)

I do exactly what Nadine216 does...change Coopers nappy before I go to bed around 10pm, and he hasn't woken up in the morning with a wet nappy since!!

I started to have the same problem with him waking early soaking wet and cold, but since doing this, it is so much better.

He also goes back to sleep very quickly and easily (that is IF he even wakes up!)

I would either change his nappy before you went to bed OR. at woolworths they have these nappy inserts you put them inside cloth or disposables and they just add an extra layer.. and they don't cost the earth either..

i know it is the obvious thing to do, change his nappy when i go to bed, but my DH and i dont want to try this - our little man was a TERRIBLE sleeper up until recently, so there's no way we're game enough to attempt a nappy change after he has fallen asleep! we break out in a sweat when we go in to his room to put an extra blanket on him!

i have looked in Safeway for those nappy liners but cant seem to find them.... maybe i'll try Coles or somewhere else. i am trying Huggies nappies for the overnight one now, last night seemed better but we'll give it a few more times to double check. i will try inserting a pad in there next, if huggies dont work!

Good luck!!1 I can understand not wanting to wake him to change a nappy.. those nappy liners are probably your best bet then. they are a yellow packet. if that helps at all :) in our shop at least they are on the top shelf just past the nappies. :lol:

I have always found Huggies to be great overnight. I had a bigger wee'er too.

I have not tried this, and I don't know how practical it would be - just thought about it, but if you put a normal cloth nappy over the night nappy - that could add some extra absorpsion without you having to buy nappy liners ect. I mean the old fasion folded cloth nappy. Yes it would make his bum look big, but him being dry is the objective
