Sugar Intake
Hi, do you think high sugar intake during pregnancy has anything to do with gestational diabetes? I have had a healthy pregnancy right through but at the moment I crave ice cream, lollies and ice blocks (water ones - zooper doopers) through the day. I normally have a bowl of ice cream at night. I just hope I'm not putting myself or baby at risk. Does anyone else eat sweet things throughout their pregnancy?
I will get the GD test in a couple of weeks as it's standard these days (what Ob says).
Thanks for your help!
Love Bindy xx

Ive had a huge sweet tooth this time and i was cleared of GD.

Hi Kimbaz, how sweet are we talking? xx
-
i too have a major sweet tooth during pragnancy and no GD here!! i live on lollies and chocolate but my fav at the mo is icecream and fruit.....i'm sure you will be fine.
-
Ive eaten nothing but chocolates, tea/coffee with way to much suger, cakes, slices...ice cream, milo.....fruit includes watermelon, rockmelon, pineapple (all the sweet fruits pretty much)
Hmm now i read that back...oppppps!!

I ate so many sweet things too. I used to sit at my desk at work and eat biscuits all day! No GD here.
-
I also ate a lot of sweets (fruits, chocolates, juices, and ice creams). I didn't/don't have any GD. So, I am sure you will be fine.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, most women have no symptoms for GD so what you are describing is probably not a symptom, just a sugar craving. :-)

I have a major sweet tooth with this pregnancy and was given the GD all clear. I was worried when I had he test too though because I'd been eating so much chocolate!

I have a stupidly high intake of sugar. I drink decaff tea with 2-3 sugars, drink 2L a day of chocolate milk, eat chocolate, biscuits, and pretty much have sugar in EVERYTHING. I also eat a lot of salad and meat but mostly it's sugar, a lot of icecream with milo, chocolate pudding pancakes with chocolate sauce and ice cream, and litres of softdrink. I had the GD test and was cleared, it's still not good for your health lol

Yep, another sugar freak here, and my GD test was really low. I don't think that is an excuse to say eating lots of sugar is ok, but the sugar cravings are pretty strong aren't they!!
-
the sugar won't cause GD (or any type of diabeties), but rather, if you have GD, the sugar can be bad for you. if that makes sense. my family have all a history of all three types of diabeties in it, so i regularly get tested - but the amount of suger i eat isn't an issue unless I actually have the disease.

With my first pregnancy I had GD but with this pregnancy I was cleared and I think I have been way worse with my sugar intake. I thought I was the only one who downed 2 litres of flavoured milk a day and my lunch consists of choc bikkies, icecream, chocolate and the list goes on. I just crave and crave and crave sugar. My OB said that I must be lacking something (ie. salt) if I am craving something that much... Oh well, not long to go now so bring on the flavoured milk and chocolate I say!!! xxoo

i've always been a packet-of-lollies a day girl plus all the other bits and pieces in between! I was worried about GD too, but lo and behold it came up fine!! PHEW!

Bindy - sugar does not cause GDM or any other type of diabetes. A high sugar intake in pregnancy (or any other time) is not good for you or the baby though. High blood glucose levels can cause a larger baby and weight gain in the mother. These things are not optimal in pregnancy - rather sticking to your regular diet ensures you grow a baby that is the right fit for your body. High sugar intake stops you eating what is a healthy choice. Of course the odd bowl of ice cream or icy pole isn't going to make much difference. But excessive sugar intake can.
Of course if youdo have GDM then you will need to watch your intake of carbohydrate of which sugar is one.
Good luck with your GTT. I hope it all goes well..

Thanks so much girls! You have been a great help all of you! Flowerchild, I love when you post, you're so experienced in being a Mummy and always have heaps of information!
Well girls, I eat 3 zooper zoopers per day some days (not all days) and have a cupcake now and then. I love to have ice cream every night (only two scoops) with some ice magic on it. I love lolly bananas but only ever have about 8 at the most every couple of days. As for fizzy drinks, I haven't really had much of that. I drink lots of water and make sure I drink apple and cranberry juice (no added sugar of course).
I don't believe I eat sweet things in high amounts but just moderately but I do crave them more lately.
Thanks again, you have all put my mind at ease, I will try not to worry!! ;)
Lotsa Love Bindy xxoo
