sleeping too much?
Hi everyone,
just a question...my baby is 9weeks old
ive been reading alot of books about trying to get a baby into a routine and they all seem to suggest that a baby of this age should be able to stay awake for two hours during the day but my bub always gets tired after one ....and sleeps two short naps and one big one during the day...
What is normal? is my baby sleeping too much?

Yolly the sad thing is that the bubs don't read the books to know what to do ;) Every baby is different and will sleep for different amounts of time. Maybe your little one is very active in that hour & gets tired more easily than the babies in the books!! I wouldn't worry so long as he is feeding well & gaining weight.

Hi Yolly
Congrats on your bub! Hope it has been going well. I personally wouldn't be too worried about the sleep thing..if bub is tired they are tired! and need to sleep! There is no point keeping them up if they obviously need a nap! As adults, we are all different with our sleep needs. I need about double the amount of sleep compared to my hubby! (although I don't get it )..
My DD is a big sleeper (as in needs lots of naps for her age)..she often gets tired about an hour and a half after of being awake..and she's getting up to 6 months. If she is trired I put her to bed and she is a great napper during the day.
Gosh if I was doing as much growing as them, I would be exhausted too!!
If your bub is nice and alert, happy and content in between naps I wouldn't be concerned. I'm sure others might have other opinions but that's what I think anyway!
All the best

Yolly don't worry yourself over your bub not sleeping when the books say they should be. I read books with my first and found that my baby wasn't like any of the babies in the books. I too was upset about it and then i realised, im just going to do what ever is best for me and the baby. It all worked out in the end. She was having 2 sleeps during the day and then sleeping through after a few months. It was a lot easier for me when i stopped stressing about the perfect baby in those books. Enjoy your baby

hi there
2 hours sounds like a pretty long stretch for the 'average' 9 week old baby... (mine was the exception and was awake all day!!)... but even now at 7 months there are often times when after 2 hours she is tired... so i wouldn't worry exactly how long your bubs has been awake before its time for sleep again, its great that you can tell when he/she is ready for sleep. if you think of it this way, you and i, we don't get up and go to bed at the exact same time each day, after the exact same duration, some days we might need more sleep than others, others we may be fine to go to bed a bit later... same with bubs, they are going to be different each time.... some days they may go an hour between naps, others 2 or 3 (as they get older).... i think its just best to watch for their cues as to when its time for sleep, and keep the clock at the back of your mind, if u know what i mean...
sounds like you have been blessed with a great little sleeper - enjoy it while its happening you never know whats around the corner :-)

My DD was exactly the same at that age - after *exactly* one hour she would clearly let me know she was tired and it would be relatively easy to settle her to sleep.. Anyone I would mention this to (as I was also worried she wasn't getting enough stimulation in her limited "up" time) would laugh and tell me how lucky I was!!! Even now at 11 months she tends to get tired after about 2-3 hours.. As other have said, just go with the flow...
