Some basic questions about gestation diabetes

Hi, I was just diagnosed with GD and I know there is alot of information about it on the boards but I was hoping to get some feed back from other GD mummies..

I asked the dr what my bsl readings were from the 2hr GDT and I got 4.8 at the start then after 1hr I got 8.7 then at 2hrs I got 9.5, What were your readings and are these concidered on the low side?

I have an appt with an Endocronoligist tomorow can someone tell me what to expect? will I need to monitor my bsl's? do they supply you with a kit? will I need to see the endo regularly?

What is the roll of a Diabetes educator?

Hi. I have just had GD so I might be able to answer a few of your questions.
Your 4.8 fasting result is fine which is a good thing. From memory the result after 1 hour should be less than 8.5 and after 2 hours less than 7.5.
You will probably be given a meter to monitor your BSL for the next week or so. You should be seen by a dietician to tell you what foods to eat and avoid (low g.i, low sugar).
Depending on your readings they will decide if you need insulin or not. A lot of people can control it by diet and exercise. I saw the Ob and diabetes specialist every 2nd week from 28 weeks and saw the Ob weekly from 34 weeks.

I currently have GD. 3rd Pregnancy with it.. I am also on insulin for it and yet again 3rd pregnancy with it

The diabetes educators are of a great help to me. I see them or ring them weekly with my bsl and I can ring them at any other time if I have Questions. the actual Dr IMO was useless as she was simply to busy and didn't understand when i told her what I was on ect...

I was doagnosed with my 2nd pregnancy at the same stage you are now. I was told I had it earlier the last 2 times..

anyways any more questions just ask away...

Oh and they should supply you with a kit and you will no doubt see a dietician as well

Hi guys I saw the endocronoligist today... well what a waist of time thank goodness medicare rebated me the majority of the bill because he soooo wasn't worth $200! I learnt nothing from him and felt like I was being treated like a child, even gave me a scrap piece of paper with "good carbs" and "bad carbs" on it LOL! I see the Diabetes educator tomorow morning and she'll be giving me a kit so I can monitor my bsl 4 times a day for a week and take it from there. I did buy a great diabetic magazine today with recipes and tips and christmas things in it so least it wasn't a complete loss :lol:

The educators are so much better then the Drs..

Thanks Nic, the educator was fantastic I think I was there an hour. She got me in to see a dietitian on saturday and I got heaps out of her aswell so I'm armed and dangerous :lol:
I've been testing my bsl for 5 days and I'm getting 4's in the mornings and 5's through the day, I was told to aim for under 5.5 mornings and under 6.5 through the day so looks good so far. I've been following the diet really closely to make sure I stay bellow the levels but after next week I'll experiment a little and add some treats in to see what my body can handle.

Your levels sound really good so far, hope they stay that way for you.
