Pre-Term Labour
Hi,
I am 30 wks and a few days and have been flown out to Townsville hospital from Mt Isa as I presented with 3-5 min contractions and pains (had been regular for an hour). The swabs in Mt Isa turned instantly dk blue for waters but I have not had a gush and doctor here seems to think waters have not broken.
The contractions stay subdued until it's time for new medication and they begin again until the next lot of medicine kicks in (little pink pill is all I know)...so what's the likelyhood of them stopping all together? or am I going to have this baby much sooner than expected???
I've been given the steroids and was given a pethadine shot last night when I first presented to slow labour also and kill pain (even though I didn't need the painkiller).
Bub is fine, veryactive and heart rate is good, is head down but laying with back against my right hip. Fluid levels are good round bub and scan revealed no abnormalities that have been told about.
What's the chances of going to full term still???
Cheers
Lisa

It's really hard to say Lisa. Bubs could be in there a whole lot longer yet, or he'she could be here tomorrow. Its something that could change very quickly, all depending on how bubs is coping in there.
Fingers crossed that the whole lot longer option is what happens though - it must be very scary for you.

Hi Lisa,
Sorry to hear you have had a scare. I have a really positive experience to tell you.
I went into pre term labor at 32weeks, contraction 3-5 mins apart for an hour or so after them being irregular. I Tested positive for the Fetal Fibronectin test, that gave me a 2 in 3 chance of having my DS in the next 2 weeks. I was kept in hospital for a few days, got given the steriod shots and was on nephatimine (sp?) which sounds like the pills you were given. Anyhow because I live only 5 minutes from the hospital they let me go home before 37 weeks, aparently the only reason. Anyway I was very worried about giving birth to him before 37 weeks. I posted a similiar thread as this one, really concerned. Alan told me that he had known on 1 women to make it to full term (37+) weeks after testing positive to the same test, and I made it to 38+5 weeks.
But like Sherie said, sometimes it stops for good, but sometimes the drugs only slow it down long enough for the steroids to work, then bubs comes anyhow.
I hope my story has helped to reassure you that your bubba might hang out a little longer. Fingers crossed for you.
Just try to get as much rest as possible.
Good luck hun.... How are you feeling now? Have you had any more concractions since leaving the hospital?

How scary for you. I wish you all the best and hope for a much longer pregnancy!
I don't want to alarm you, but my DS was born at 30wks and although it was hard road through the NICU, he is now a very happy 10 month old. He is a little behind developmentally, but otherwise healthy!!
Take Care

I went into pre-term labour at 33 weeks, was given steroids and the tablets but bubs held on until 39wks. I also was very scared, I continued to have contractions on and off and was in hospital another 4 times. Try and rest as much as you can, hopefully bubs will stay in a little longer. Good luck.

It is a very scary when this happens. I started contracting at 27 weeks - they were 3 minutes apart. I went to the hospital and was given a pill (forgot the name) which didn't work, then I was given pethidene which slowed the contractions but didn't stop them and then they put a patch on my tummy which eventually stopped them. I was in hospital for 4 days as they came back a few times. I was given a steriod shot as a precaution too. I am now 35 weeks and still get tightenings daily. I was told that I would continue to have them until bubs was born. Up until a couple of weeks ago I was told that my cervix was still long and closed but they can't see now because of bubs head.
I have just been on bed rest since 27 weeks and am taking things easy. A midwife suggested that I didn't lift anything heavy or stretch up as this can start the contractions. I find now if the tightenings become regular (every 3 minutes), I just lie down and they eventually they stop.
Just rest up - all the best.

Hi there!
I went into pre-term labour at 23 weeks with DD #2. Contractions stopped but i had 3 visits all up and was diagnosed with an Irritable Uterus. I was also given steriods to mature bub. Basically all you can do if just rest and wait it out. Hopefully things will settle down while you are on bed rest.
You are in a great hospital which is equiped to take care of you and your baby should bub decide to come early. They have an excellent NICU and SCN. Not that i reached that far myself, but i did have a meeting with some paeds from NICU and they were lovely.
Try not too stress and just put your feet up hun.
Wishing you all the best!

Hi, DD1 tried to come at 34 weeks. they gave me the steriods ans nifetipine which worked too well. Sarah was born at 41+2 weeks. she came naturally on the day they were going to induce her.
