Cramping after miscarriage

I spent Tuesday night in hospital having a miscarriage after the dr found during my 8.5 week scan that bubby had no heart beat. I was discharged on Wednesday morning and am due back next week for a follow up scan. Could anyone tell me how long the cramping will continue? My bleeding slowed down the day I left hospital as did my cramps, but arked back up again this morning at 4 a.m. having been preceded by more cramps. I'm now at work and the cramps are back, so its only a matter of time before the flood starts again. I was just wondering how long this part of the process may take. Sorry i can't be of much help i had a missed m/c and a d and c but i do know that if the cramps continue i would get checked as i had cramps for several weeks til the doctors found i had an infection .

I had a miscarriage on Christmas Day and my D&C on the 27th and I cramped pretty much the entirety of those 3 days until the operation.

I'm sorry to hear about you loss :( Did you get a D&C in the hospital or are you miscarrying naturally? After the D&C I cramped only minimally that night and that was all.

I too had a miscarriage on Tuesday night.
Before I was rushed into a d&C because my blood loss was extreme I was told that I would continue to have cramping if I had a "Natural" Miscarriage until everything was expelled from the uterus.
After my d&c I have had very minimal cramping and almost no blood loss.

I too had cramping while i was M/C naturally and the blood loss stopped and started over the 3 days until I had a D&C the cramping stopped fairly well straight after this AF returned the following month and I haven't had such bad period cramping ever!!! but it passed after the first day thankfully.

With my third MC, which was natural, they gave me an order for 10 percocet (a narcotic) to be taken as needed every 6 hours. So at least for a few days, afterward. But your cramps should be decreasing in intensity over time, not increasing. So if you're cramping worse now than before, let your doctor know. It might just be the uterus trying to expel some tissue, but better safe than sorry. Best of luck.

I am still having cramps a week after my pregnancy was expelled. After reading posts here, I have started to think that this may not be normal and I intend to pop into the docs on Monday to ask about it. Will let you know what they say (I hope that I dont need a d&c)

Very sorry that you are having to experience this...
I too had a "no heartbeat" scan and decided to m/c naturally. It was painful. It lasted about 4-5 days, the last 2 in hospital.
I am assuming that they did an ultrasound on you before you were discharged - this will determine whether or not all of the POC was/has been expelled. If they did not do one, request one.
If they didn't do one and you also did not have a D&C, the your uterus will most likely still be trying to expel the POC - this should slow and stop on its own within an week or so (so I was told). If it gets more intense and/or you start bleeding more heavily again, you should go to Casualty straight away. Unresolved POC can lead to serious infections as the blood will become septic. (sorry to be graphic but it is very serious)

Having said all of this, a good warm wheat pack and a warm shower can help ease the pain of the cramps, as can a small increase in your intake of salt (so im told believe it or not!! lol)
If you are at all worried though, return straight back to casualty and ask them to check you out with an ultrasound.

I am so sorry to here about your loss. i Misscarried naturally, i had cramps with my bleeding and it went on for about a week and a half.

Thank you everyone for your replies. At 2.30 this morning I was still cramping, but the intensity of the cramping and the bleeding have both slowed down, so I guess I'm almost there. Yes they scanned me before discharging me on Wednesday, and I'm due in for another this Wednesday to make sure all is clear. Fingers crossed I won't have to have the D&C as well. Hope you're doing OK. I am still having cramps. Phoned the early pregnancy unit, as I was convinced that I have an infection (Also brown disch.) They told me that the cramping and spotting could just be part of the process and the brown disch is "old blood". I think I'll just have to watch and wait.

Thanks again everyone. The cramps seem to have decided to leave me but I'm still getting a little bleeding this morning, so am glad to be seeing the doctor in a few hours for the scan. Keeping my fingers crossed that a D&C won't be necessary, but at this point anything to get the body on the mend is a good option. Canary, do keep us posted on how you are progressing. How was the scan? I hope that you did not need a D&C. I have had some light bleeding, which stopped, leaving the brown disharge, only to come back again 2 days later. I get cramps daily, usually in the late aternoon or evening (odd). Other than that, I feel well and there are no other signs that I might have an infection. Getting bored waiting for everything to go back to normal, but otherwise OK!

Scan on Wednesday came up clear so it seems my body has done everything it needed to do to "move on". A huge relief as I was dreading a D&C. Still bleeding a little, although it seems to be very slight spotting and only more substantial when I do anything physical. So will just have to take it easy a little longer. Glad to hear you are having no signs of infection. Are you having a scan to confirm all is well? I too am bored waiting for everything to get back to normal, but as everyone keeps telling me, it all takes time. At 40 that's something I don't really have a lot of! Patience - I really must work on that! Take care Canary - keep us posted on how you are healing.

Sorry that I did not reply for such a long time, but the situation did not really change until now! I had occasional spotting and also brown d/c. The cramps went away for a bit, but came back 5 days ago and I was expecting AF, who finally arrived today, which is a huge relief! Yes, it is really hard to keep waiting for something to happen. I hope all is back to normal with you too now?
DH and I are looking forward to finally TTC again this month, but i have warned him that my cycle might be a bit haywire for the next few months.
