Hi girls,
My first fertility appointment is July 16th - does anyone know what to expect?
I wonder if DH will be asked to do a sperm test there and then? And whether i'll have any tests done, or is it just to inform the consultant of the current situation?

Hey Gwen :smt006 I guess things must be a bit different in Wales, but I'll tell you what happened for us....
We told our GP how long we had been TTC & he organised for Aaron to have a semen analysis done. They will test your DH first cos the tests are much less invasive (apparently) than the tests we have to go through. When the results came back the Dr was a bit concerned so he gave Aaron a referral to an endocrinologist. He expected that everything would be ok, so he gave me a referral to another Dr (not sure what type he is yet) saying to go after Aaron had the all clear.
Sooooo Aaron goes to the endocrinologist who says his sperm count is low. They then did more tests - another semen analysis, blood tests & urine analysis. The results came back last Wednesday saying sperm count was exactly the same (low :( ) and that there was nothing we can do about it. They have said we will get pg eventually, but IVF is probably the way we'll have to go if we don't want to wait for 5 years or so (after waiting 2 already, it's a looong time).
My appointment with the specialist is on July 5th. I'm not sure what happens there, what tests or anything, I just have to wait and see. I think they will probably want to give me a laparoscopy (sp?) as my Dr has suspected endometriosis for a number of years.
After I get the all clear (hopefully) I think we'll start talking about IVF. We want a big family, so I can't wait around for too long.
Once I get back from my appoinment on the 5th I'll update you on what happened - that way you can be a bit more prepared than I was!!

Sarah can i ask why your Dr hasnt sent you for a laparoscopy to check for endmetriosis yet?? Is it because of your age?
Sorry if getting too personal, but i ask this because when i was 17 my Gyno told me I had all the symptoms of having Endometriosis, plus my mum had it as well, but because i wasnt 25 i couldnt have it yet and to make an appointment with him for my 25th birthday and on that day he would book me in for an operation to remove it. Never went back to him again. Took me 3 years to fall pregnant, and now second time around it has been 3.5 years since we stopped using contraceptives.

I had all the paper work filled out ready to go about 2 years ago, but it went missing (????) so I asked for more paperwork from the gynae & they told me I had to make a new appointment to get it - I just never did.
The gynae basically said that it was up to me - there is no cure, so if it's basically to see if you have it & remove whatever's there. He said it's more of a peace of mind thing.
Not sure if I agree with that though......
BTW - my GP started thinking of endo when I was 17 as well (after I fainted at uni from the pain).
the same thing happened to my mum. She fainted from the Endo, they rushed her to hospital and when they operated on her they opened her up took one look, obviously took some samples or something, then closed her up. When she woke they told her and my dad she had cancer and it would be a miracle if she lived to see xmas (which was 3 months away) A few days later they came back and said she had Endo and it was getting ready to attack her organs. She was only 31. She ended up having a full hysterectomy, then had to have a double colostomy as well. So she had it pretty bad. It plays on my mind a bit that i might have it as well but because i was too young nothing was done. My GP had the referal done up for me to have a laparoscopy done (5 yrs ago), then i found out i was pregnant so didnt need it. But it still plays on my mind from time to time.
Anyway hopefully you wont be needing that appointment anyway hey?

Just about the endometreosis - I've had this. When I was 18 I had an ovarian cyst and whilst having the laparoscopy for that, they found patches of endo which were removed. As far as I know Nic, age has absolutely nothing to do with it - clearly it didn't in my case LOL! Apparently if you've had it once, you have around a 50% chance of getting it again (so my gyno at the time said), so obviously it's something that I'm very aware of too.

How lucky they found your endo while already doing another op on you. I'd never heard that there was a 50% chance of endo returning, so i've learn't something new (yet again)

Yeah it was lucky that was for sure as obviously it would have just continued to get worse and the only way to know if you have it for sure is to have the lap done, so I'm glad I avoided having to have 2 done!!
