They gave her cake

they gave my DD cake at day care yesterday. she has an egg allergy and i have said many times, no egg, not even in cake or jatz. anyway, i read that she had cake and i said oh did it have egg in it. the lady said i dont know. cant she have egg even in cake? NO!!!!! anyway, she didnt have any type of reaction (lucky for them). apart from me being annoyed at the staff, does this mean that she may have grown out of her allergy as she dint have a reaction?

how do you go about introducing them again. we were told she had 85% chance of growing out of it by 5 years. we are supposed to get her tested again in august. but what is the procedure for reintroducing egg? should i just wait for the test?

How frustrating! And how awful for the centre to do that!!! I hope you reported it to the Director.

I would find out IF the cake did actually have egg in it before I thought about re-introducing eggs.
But I imagine that the reintroduction of eggs would be similar to introducing it for the first time. Starting with the yolk and then progressing to the white?

Hollo, that is a very serious breach of the rules. If a child has an allergy it must be made very clear to all staff. I know at the boys' day care there is a little boy with an egg allergy and his photo is on the fridge with a huge sign saying 'Egg Allergy - NO Birthday cakes please". I would follow this up.

It does sound like she might have grown out of the allergy. I second the advice of talking to a MCHN or GP about this. It would be great if you no longer have the allergy to worry about. GL.

yeah i have filled out heaps of paperwork, including a chart with her photo and steps to take if she has a reaction to something. plus, i used to work there so i know the staff personally and i dont want to cause any s**t :-) hopefully it wont happen again! i think i will speak to her GP after i have double checked that the cake actually didnt have egg in it. it wasnt birthday cake it was cake supplied and baked at the centre for afternoon tea so the cook will be able to tell me what was in it.

Hollo... I used to have an egg allergy but grew out of it... heres hoping your DD may be the same..,

nonetheless... that is terrible that they couldnt even tell you if it had egg in it... pretty irresponsible really, regardless if they know you or not!!!!!

hollo - the list of ingredients of menu items should be available in the kitchen even if they didnt know they should have been able to tell you!! (i'm not saying they do have this just that they are supposed to) thats appauling imo i worked in childcare and you needa be so careful with stuff like that geez thats a big stuff up and even if i knew them id still be reporting it imagine if she did have a reaction? or another child with a very severe allergy had a reaction its better for them to get in trouble for it now so it sticks in their mind and they dnt do it again!!

at maddys centre the cook, cooks the cakes without eggs!! as there are egg alergies in her room!

i would just ask the cook what was in it and take action from there!

Just thought i'd share that my DD has an egg allergy however is ok with it cooked in cakes etc as the amount is miniscule however i still try to limit it iykwim. I guess it does depend on the severity of the allergy. My DD will react to raw egg alot worse than well cooked.
