To line or not to line...?

I have been using microfleece liners in my BBH (both hemp & bamboo) to 1. keep DS's bum drier & 2. protect the nappy from the zinc & castor oil cream.

My question is - am I better off not using the zinc & castor oil (to prevent nappy rash) and not using the liner? What are the MCN like for nappy rash if used on their own??

Depends on what your bub is like - some kids get rashes at the drop of a hat, others seem to have invincible bums - for us, teething causes rash, no matter what nappy he's in.
I don't always use cream if his bum is clear...and the MCN don't cause a rash...it's the teething.

So...I guess my answer is, try it and see! :p If I don't want to use microfleece but still want to use cream, I'll use a flushable liner, like the eenees ones.

Ezz - is he prone to nappy rash? I wouldn't use a cream unless I knew he would get a rash without it, if that makes sense. I use a bit of bottom balm if things are looking a bit red, and I'm pretty sure it's not a problem touching the nappy directly.

I find without a liner the nappies get stained by poo, which is why I like to use a liner. I use either microfleece, or flushable.. I have bioliners from natureschild.

But I agree - just try it and see :)

He got a bit red the first week home from hospital (clinic nurse described it as "just a bit burnt") & have been using zinc & castor oil since then. I don't find the liners make much difference to the staining - the poo seeps through them (or around the sides!) He is wearing his first MCN without a liner at the moment - I'll see how it goes!

Yeah I didn't use liners for a newborn, not much is going to stop that poo! I 'burned' Riv's butt early on too - drinking too much acidic orange juice! How was I to know? :p

I use flushable liners with DS, as DH refuses to do nappies otherwise! It does keep it more contained. (well seems to anyway)

(Speaking of liners Meg :redface: I FINALLY got dh's CRAP off my sewing table - required much red faced shouty tantrumy type behaviour. So the rotary cutter is ready to go, and a goody bag will follow.)

So far, so good. I'm enjoying not getting an oily finger every time I change him! I still used the liner & cream overnight (because he will be lying in that dirty nappy for longer), but not using it during the day. No rashes yet & DS seems happy with the faster nappy changes!

Ezz, I'm pretty sure that I read that you're using BBH nappies? If so, don't stress too much about not using the cream, natural fibres are really good for the skin, so I think you'll find that your DS doesn't get any rash. Also, I think I remember that you were using sposies at first? I found that they 'burnt' DS bum a little when he was tiny, but once he went into cloth we never had a problem.

I usually use flushable liners, but when DS has had nappy rash due to teething lately, I've used my BBH nappies without a liner so it sits next to his skin!

Janie - Good memory!! Yeah, I was using Huggies when DS's bum got burnt (now using BBH). After a day without cream, DS's bum looks fine :)
