Anti-colton antibody
I was wondering if anyone else out there has 'anti-coltonA' antibody in their blood?
As I am RH- I had the usual antibody screens before being given my anti-D injection. I was called back to give blood on two more occassions and then called into see my GP (as my OBS was on holiday). He informed me that the screens had detected 'anti-colton' and that he had been in discussions with the haematologist at the Red Cross in Perth. Apparently only 3/1000 people have this antibody and there are only 3 blood donors with this type in the whole country.
Ultimately this means I have to have baby in Perth (not 5 minutes away in Kalgoorlie Hospital) at KEMH with 'super doctor' Dr Craig Pennell. I am being pumped up on Iron supplements and may have to have an iron infusion as they are going to take a unit or so of my own blood from me before I deliver our baby. The theory is that if I have a lost of bleeding and need a blood transfusion they will give me back my own blood (as my body will attack any blood that isn't A- with anti-colton). They are also going to bring some dontated blood from over east, just in case.
They aren't quite sure but believe baby should be fine - they have done some tests to predict what blood type baby will be in case our bloods cross during delivery and bubs needs a transfusion.
Hopefully these precautions won't be needed but it's better to be safe than sorry. Just thought I'd share and see if anyone else had 'funny blood?'
