NIB health insurance
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and wondering if anyone can give me any advice :) We are planning a homebirth for #2 (currently 12 weeks along) and have been told that our health insurance, NIB, will cover NOTHING for a homebirth (we have top private hospital cover and have done for 5 years). We are in the proccess of writing letters and all that but just wondering if anyone has had any success with getting money out of NIB and what they did....They were great when we had DS in a private hospital with an ob but *sigh* i don't know how much success we will have this time round!
Looking forward to hearing some positive stories

I don't have a story for you keythree, sorry. I do want to comment though on the ridiculousness of the situation though. Insurance companies pay out thousands for normal healthy women to see obstetricians, knowing that the majority of them will experience interventions, yet someone who wants to birth the safest way at home has to beg and plead to be compensated. It's crap :)

NIB cover small amounts of midwife visits but thats it. I just swapped from NIB to HBA, more chance of a homebirth rebate there.

Did you have any luck finding assistance through private health??

It doesn't surprise me though!! We have only had full private cover for not quite 12months now and the only reason we took out the cover was because DP got slugged $3000 off last yrs tax return....high taxable incomes up here in a mining town, but guess what if i did want to go to a private hospital and have an OB the next time i would have to travel 1600kms to do so. Basically you have insurance for tax purposes and not medical reason's at present anyway and i guess in an unfortunate way we might actually use it if necessary!!
