baby car seat burns baby
:cry:little Mylo got a bad burn on his leg thanks to the metal clips on the seatbelt- he has a rear facing baby seat that converts into a child seat, you know the type? well the metal tongues (that go into the groove to lock the buckle) got insanely hot while the car was parked in the sun so when we put him in it touched his legs and burnt a big blistering burn on him. I tried really hard to not let it touch him but i failed: while i was busy holding one side off him and dousing where it touched his arm with water, the other side was under him burning his leg. i thought it was safely under his clothes but i was wrong. he was screaming his head off, not because his arm got burnt, but coz his leg was still burning. once i pulled it out from under him he stopped, and then i realised. i felt so bad i cried. when we got home i put aloe vera on it and rang 13health, they asked me a heap of questions and said get him to hospital emergency immediately. they said it could be life threatening, so to check he didn't stop breathing on the way, carry a mobile phone incase we needed to stop and call an ambulance and to watch for this and that... terrified we raced him to emergency, where they looked at him and said it's a superficial burn, aloe vera is good, keep it clean and here's some cream. :) moral of the story, cars get really hot, those clips can be dangerous, and a baby's skin is so thin.

Thanks for sharing! I know those buckles get hot but I didn't realise how bad it good be for a little one.
-
Oh you poor thing, and poor Mylo.
Thank God it was only a superficial burn. Hope he recovers really soon. Thanks for the warning.
-
Oh, your poor little man! I'm glad it was nothing serious.
I noticed the other day how hot our car seat buckles get and thought there has got to be something they can do about that. Maybe we should all put a towel or blanket over the buckles when the seat is not in use? After your story I think I will do that tomorrow!
-
I'm glad that Mylo is ok, it will probably take a lot longer for you to get over it than for him. It's amazing how hot those buckes get, isn't it? I'd never have thought theyd burn like that though, so thanks for sharing.

Oh you poor thing! Poor bubba too! Hope it heals real fast.

Sorry to hear about poor Mylo's leg. Thank God the burn wasn't woo bad, but anything that happens to our babies is heartbreaking.
I think it's Babies Galore that sells covers that go over the front of the car seats to stop them from getting hot. I know someone makes and sells them and I am sure BG is it.
-
Poor little darlin. and poor you! I'm sure it will heal up quickly.
I'd be interested to know why they said it was life threatening?? I've never heard of a burn like that being life threatening before, unless they expected him to go into shock or something??
-
Oh what a horrible thing to happen to the both of you. Wishing little Mylo all the very best for a quick recovery.
We've noticed that those buckles get hot too, so we put a muslin wrap over the window as soon as we get Caeleb out of the car. Since doing this, the buckles don't heat up and it keeps the car cooler too.
Big hugs for you and Mylo!
Celsie. xoxox

Owie, poor bubba (and poor mumma  ) I hope it heals quickly for him.
Charlie has been burnt by them too, though not nearly as bad. Might try putting a towel on his seat next time and see if that works.

Toys r us sells a reflective cover (like windscreen cover) for putting over your chair. I sometimes just throw a nappy over the buckles which keeps them a little bit cooler as they don't have the sunlight reflecting off them directly. Hope Mylo's burn improves quickly

thanks everyone for your well-wishes... it turns out it was 40 degrees yesterday, and the car is black, parked in the midday sun it was probably 60 dgs inside. we had those reflective window sun shades in front and back but they're useless! now i leave the windows down when parked in public if i can, and yeah...cover the baby seat.
So why did the 13health nurse think it was life threatening? (the emergency doctors wondered that too)... i think it's because the burn as described over the phone was bad enough that it could potentially cause him to go into shock and stop breathing or pass out. they asked if he was blue around the lips, gasping for breath or had gotten very sleepy or passed out. I said no to all, but after he stopped screaming we drove home and he was asleep in the car. thats when they said go immediately to emergency. they said to watch his breathing didn't stop, that his head didnt' indent deeply on the top or that he didn't get really sleepy.

Hope Mylo makes a speedy recovery!
I realised this yesterday as we had to park in a very open, sunny area. Luckily Logan has a baby head rest(one of those attachable ones) in his car seat, so i just put the buckles behind it, stopped them from getting hot.

oh you poor thing. My friend did the exact same thing with her son, it is so easily done, especially with such a small bub, hope he heals quickly.
