D & C Recovery time?

Hello

Could anyone please shed some light on what your D&C recovery times were? I can remember when I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks in 2003 I only bled for a few days and was back at work 4 days later. I have been told that the later the pregnancy the harder the recovery time is and am wondering what people's personal experiences were?

I dont particularly want to discuss the reasons behind it but it looks like much to my disappointment I am going to have to undergo a d&c in the next few days. I am numb all over :cry::cry::cry: but am now trying to be practical as we are due to fly out later in the week on a 10 day family holiday that if we were to cancel would become very costly. If I wait till I get back I will be forced to go thru labour which is something I do not want to have to do:cry: so I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and am trying to work out the best solution.

Oh darl, I am sorry to see this post. I had a d & c at 15 weeks and recovered very quickly. Bled for about a week and felt physically fine after a day or two. One thing though, be prepared for your milk to come in. Take care, and my thoughts are with you. xx

i had a d/c at 12 weeks. I bled slightly for a day or so, but physical was Ok by the next day. Its the mental side of it that you can't put a time limit on

Odette - thats interesting cause my OB said to expect up to 10 days of bleeding cause as he said there was more tissue matter involved.

Nic - didnt think about the milk coming in. Am hoping cause it is only going to be 13 weeks that I wont have to experience that.

Everyones personal experiences are much appreciated and thank you so much for sharing ladies.:clap: Its good to know what I can possibly expect in advance altho I do understand that everyones bodies are different. I suppose, typical of me, I am trying to "plan" and organise as much as I can and make the best of the situation hence being practical about it. I did all my crying a few days ago now just have to get "down to business" so to speak.:(

I had a D&C at ~10 weeks, and bled (very lightly) for ~16 days. I actually stopped for the first 2 days after the D&C and then started. Passed some clots after ~15 days of bleeding (sorry if TMI). FYI the obs told me to expect 10-14 days of bleeding, so I checked in when it continued longer, but didn't turn out to be an issue. Otherwise felt physically quite ok.

My first D& C was quite traumatic (was booked in, but passed :angel: at home and lost quite alot of blood pre surgery- also sleep deprived), so I felt exhausted for days. With my second, I had no symptoms and found out my baby had passed away when I had an U/S. My surgery was planned and I recovered in a day, minimal PV loss but be can't say the same for my boobs. I was leaking everywhere (sorry TMI) not a nice thing to cope with. I believe if all goes well you will be definitely be ok to go on holidays, will be a perfect pick me up I reckon Just don't forget to pack the nursing pads!! Good luck

Hi Gabysmum - I am so sorry to hear that you have lost your baby. I will keep you in my thoughts.

I had a D&C at 20 weeks after we found out our baby had passed away at 15 weeks. In the recovery room I had quite severe cramps and had painkillers administered via a drip. I was then able to leave about 4 hours after the op. I had minimal bleeding for the first couple of days and I found any cramping was controlled by Nurofen (I had Panadeine Forte but did not use it). The bleeding recommenced about 6 days later, and I believe I passed a clot. The bleeding then stopped again for 11 days and then started again. I bled on and off for around 6 weeks. I was informed that the bleeding is not an issue so long as you don't have severe cramping or a fever. If you do develop either, than you need to speak to a dr as it may be an infection. You also can not use tampons for the bleeding.

:(Gabysmum, I have had 2 D&C at 12 weeks the first no problems a week or so of bleeding then back to normal, well as normal as you can be!!! The second far more traumatic had the D&C and had pain and cramping for 3 weeks, ended up back in surgery, it seems not all the tissue was removed and I ended up with a bad infection that took months to get over properly.
Remember to take it easy, while on your holiday and definately no swimming!!! wishing you all the best and hoping things are not too bad afterwards.

I had D&C at 10 weeks I was very lucky in that, I had 1 day of spotting and no pain.
It really looks like everyone is different. I can only wish and pray you have minimal problems and a speedy recovery. I hope the trip to the Gold Coast takes your mind of sad things and that all you wishes come true soon. Take Care.

I found my natural miscarriage at 8 weeks a lot easier than my second trimester d&c. Partly because I was further along and it took me more time to come back to normal, partly because of the shock, and partly because I didn't have a real bleed. We had a trip planned a week after my d&c and we ended up cancelling, I was in no fit state to go overseas.

I am so sorry to hear (HUGS) that you have to go through this.

I really think everyone is different, when I had a m/c I only had the day of d&C bleeding and none after that (though days before D&C were quite heavy)

i had a D&C just seven weeks ago with a 9-week bub. we found no heartbeat at the ultrasound and i'd had minimal spotting beforehand. it took me two weeks to stop bleeding as i was still passing bubs (yes, unfortunatley they didnt do the job right) a week later. i wasn't prepared for the amount of pain i went through either, but i was back at tafe within a week although i didnt feel up to my usual strength for about a month, and i'm usually a strong person. i'm a massage therapist and landscape gardener, and 43, with fifteen years since my last pregnancy (planned that way) emotionally it took me a lot longer to come to terms with everything, i still am.

i hope this helps. and i'm so sorry you have to make this decision, but i personally believe it's better to get it over with asap. take care of yourself.
