Hi all,
Iam 20 years old and suffer from bowel adhesions and am currently on morphine to control the pain with little affect as iv been told by my general surgeon that he can not operate as the adhesions are to advanced and it would probably help the problem short term but it would come back and twice as bad. Does anybody know any other medications, things to try????
Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Morhpine is a very strong analgesic (pain relief med). If it is not having a good effect for managing the pain and your doctor is unable or unwilling to increase the dose, my suggestion would be to consult a pain specialist (ask your GP for a referral). They will assess the kind and level of pain you are in and make recommendations for the best way to treat this pain. It may be that you need to have a high dose for a "breakthrough" (which simply means to break the pain) and then regular lower doses to keep it at bay. There are many analgesics that could benefit including slow release MSContin, endone etc. I've often cared for people who have had a combination of morphine and endone. I do suggest trying to get in to see a pain consultant to assess your pain and make a recommendation.

Thank you for the advice I have already been to the pain specialist and been told they have nothing else to help me so I have got to go a pain management programme and hopefully this should help. They will not operate unless a case of life or death I have had bowel obstructions in the past as well as endo and PCOS. I already have adhesions on the bowel from my illeostomy reversal so the gynae is not sure what to do. Neither do I. Do you know of anything apart from medication to help the pain (acupunture,herbal etc?)
I want to try and concieve at some point but Iam not sure of any ill effects the adhesions will have on my body (apart from the pain)
Sorry to ask so much and moan but I really am lost on everything.

PS. I had a m/c 2 years ago when the problems started with my bowel and I found out about the endo and PCOS. Not sure if connected. x

i have crohns disease and have an iliostomy at present could you take the morphine in another way ie like the patches so you have a constant flow of pain killer also 2 years ago befor my op to create the iliostomy i was in a lot of pain and my mum surgested reflexology it actualy did help to relax me and manage my pain more

thanks for the advice iv been to a pain management clinic that have told me that the patches etc wont help. iam going to look in to reflexology. hope u get rid of the illeostomy reversed. i had the reversal as a baby and thats the reason im like this now due to the adhesions. a word of warning speak to your surgeon about the adhesions as it can cause problems years later. take care.
