In NSW
They have Preschool (our Kindy)
Kindergarten (our Prep) - Starts age 5 im pretty sure
Year 1-6
Year 7-12
Preschool isn't compulsory in NSW. Have to start kindergarten when they are about 5 (or about to turn 5)
thanks chicks, so kinder up there is the equivelent to our prep? as in its at primary school?
AJP, yep, it goes from Kindergarten to yr 6 in primary school (divided into infants K-yr2 and then primary yr 3 - 6) they have to be turning 5 by the end of June to be able to start Kindergarten in NSW and if they are 5 the year before they start, they have to go and cannot be held back another year, ie if they turn 5 in 08, they have to start school in 09, unless there are extenuating circumstances (as in being disabled etc). You can have 3yo and 4yo preschool (kinder everywhere else) and no, it isn't compulsory, but it is in the best interest of your child if they do.
it is so confusing and I wish all states were brought into line with each other. In WA yr 7 is still primary school.
thanks sherie~!! its soo confusing i wish too that all states where the same and that the starting age for kinder/prep is turning 5 by Jan 1st!
in Qld yr 7 is still primary too. Here its prep (have to be turning 5 by June 30) then 1-7, highschool is 8-12. Kindy is 3 and 4.
