Teething symptoms for almost 1 month but still no signs of any tooth yet?

I thought DD was teething when she was 5 1/2 months old because of these signs:

bad nappies giving her a red bump especially after a poo
number of poos increased (about 4-5 times/day) where it used to be a maximum of twice/day
drooling (in the very beginning, now it has stopped)
constant smacking of lips flicking her tongue up and down to rub her gums
chewing on teething toys
very whinny
sleeping habits changed completely
not wanting to eat solids
drinking less formula


She doesn't have any temperature, thank God for that...

Could that be teething or am I misinterpreting al of this? How long does teething symptoms go on before a tooth cuts out? THank you all for your replies

Each baby is different. It could be days, weeks or months. Nina started showing signs of teething at 4 months, but didn't cut her first tooth until 7.5 months.

My DS wasn't himself for about 6 weeks before his first two teeth came through. We are now going through it all again with his top two teeth but thankfully they seem to be coming through quicker.

Hopefully her teeth pop through soon so things can settle in your household.

Everyone told me my baby was teething based on stuff like that from the time she was 6 weeks old! We didn't get 1 tooth until 10months and then at 11 months we got 11 in a fornight and we didn't even notice....
All bubs are different, but for mine I've learnt not to give much credence to 'teething symptoms'. All those are developmental things too.

I am really disliking the teething symptoms effects which DD is showing. DD has been so clingy and wanting to be held every moment she's awake. During her sleep, she's moving so much she just sometimes wakes herself up... DH and I had to sleep separately at the moment because her cranky behaviours at night would not allow DH to get any sleep... Is there anything I could do in the mean time to ease the teething process? THank you!

Can you feel teeth? It might not be teething, it might just be that she is going through a developmental growth spurt. It is normal for bubs to start getting clingy about now. We even called DS vecro boy because he always needed to be held by me.

If you want you can try giving her some cold teething toys (there are ones you can put in the fridge) so she can chomp on them. If you are certain it is teeth, you can try a bit of bonjela on her gums to sooth them.

Spring angel, you are right, I think DD may not be going through teething since I don't feel anything in her lower gum yet. It could very well be what you experienced as a developmental change leading her to be so clingy... hmm, when your DD went through this, did he also feed less because DD is feeding less which is why I thought it was teething?

There have been times when DS has gone off his feeds and I have no idea why and then within a few days he is back to his normal schedule. Like just then I tried to give his morningtea which is usually a feed ( 3 segments of mandarin) and a breastfeed. He totally refused the breastfeed but happily chomped on the mandarin.

They are condfusing little creatures. As long as she is having wet nappies and seems content then as frustrating as it its, just follow her lead.

Spring, thank you for sharing your advice. I will definitely follow her lead instead of worrying myself off... I will try offering her some cool teething toys since she's always holding on them to chew on. (Maybe her tooth is hiding somewhere underneath)

No worries at all. It is easy to get worried when bubs seem uncomfy. I was also thinking perhaps get her some teething rusks. DS used to chomp on them for ages and it really seemed to give him some relief and occupy him so I could give my arms a break.

It also hurts apparently when the teeth are coming down and moving around in the gums, so whilst you may not be able to see or feel the actual teeth, they may still be feeling pain from the movement.
DS took about 4 months from first symptoms to getting his teeth. Its a rough time. He's getting his eye teeth now, and sometimes has bad days, sometimes good days, depends on how much they are moving.
Its a terrible time for both mum and bub, so hang in there, you are doing a great job :hug:

Poor DD, I can only imagine what it must be like to be suffering from the teething pain. It sucks when babies can't communicate with us by words but only by crying and whinning. I guess for my part, the best I could do to ease her discomfort is to cuddle her and be there for her aside from her teething toys. DS1 had teething signs for 3 months before the first tooth cut. DS2 had his first two cut together with no warning!!
