Hi everyone,
I'm worried I may be getting the start of mastitis.
Just wondering were you put on antibiotics when you had mastitis? If so, which one?
TIA

I was but it's a long time ago, I don't remember which one. Your GP will know the right one.
If it's just the start you might be able to avoid abs. Give your baby a big feed, then express to see if you can get more out. Or you can have a warm shower and hand express. Try putting a warm compress on before you feed, and then gently massage your breast during the feed, and while expressing. Then after feeding and expressing, put a cold compress on. Repeat this with every feed. You can also try doing two for one - that is feed from the sore side two feeds in a row, but only if the other side doesn't feel really full. You don't want to make that side sore too.
GL. I hope you can stop it from developing.
I've had antibiotics for mastitis but I can't remember which ones. I think Amoxil...
Before it really sets in try to stop it getting worse by doing what MantaRay suggested. I used to find hot facecloths on the area SOOOOOO good, whilst feeding. Just be careful to keep the heat away from bubs. Take some panadol to help too.
Hi,
How are you feeling now? Often, when a blocked duct starts (a sore, hard patch on your breast - maybe a bit red) you can overcome it by feeding frequently from the affected sides. If your baby is too full to take it, a pump may help. While your baby is feeding, gently massage your breast down towards the nipple. Many mums find a warm shower or warm compress helps release the milk. After you have fed, a coldback on the area will help reduce the inflamation. Get plenty of rest and try to eat and drink well.
if you start to get a temperature, and flu like symptoms, it might be worth taking a trip to the doctor. They will be able to prescribe a suitable antibiotic. You can keep right on breastfeeding while you are taking it, and you will be better in no time.
Warm Regards

Hi, i had mastitis 2 weeks ago - 2nd time ive had it with this baby....dr prescribed IBILEX 500......4 times a day...or was it 3  forget, but took about 2 tablets before i felt it work.
Seeing as my baby is 8 months, dr also said it was okay to take nurofen plus. I was in so much agony (flu like symptoms mainly) i took 2 x nurofen plus - i felt relief almost immediately. Talk to your dr first though
Good luck - its awful, i really feel for you.................
I agree with what others have said about heat packs, showers etc. Also, ultrasound by the physio can really help to break up the lump (when combined with massage). Whenever I get a lump, I try to shift it myself first (which I am getting much better at now, 5 months down the track) - but if it gets really red & hot, or I feel yuck, I head to the Dr.
I've was prescribed keflex (Cephalexin monohydrate) the first time, which didn't work. Then Dr put me onto Fluclox (flucloxacillan), which works well. I've used Fluclox for all 3 bouts of mastitis . You need to take the antibiotics for 10 days (which is 2 scripts of the Fluclox).
