Just a quick question. i was refered to the G.C public hospital to see the gynae department since i'm not in private health @ that was 3 wks ago.
has anyone gone through the public system and how long did they have to wait to get an appoint. (that's just an initial appoint.) and then if there a waiting list for a lap.
Am i better off paying the money for a private doc and getting in quicker?
im just sick of waiting. :-s
I went public and didn't have to wait very long at all. I had an u/sound and they knew I had a ruptured cyst so something had to be done about it, so I guess that was a little bit different.

It would depend what category (urgency) you were classified as. If you rang up the outpatients department at the hospital, they should be able to tell you.
If you wanted to get in sooner, it might be worth asking what the cost would be if you were admitted as a private patient in a public hospital (you don't need to have private health insurance .. just need to pay the fee)... it can be significantly cheaper than being a public patient in a private hospital if you don't have private health insurance IYKWIM.
A Girlfriend of mine went public but made an appointment with a gynie that had "rights" to the public hospital. Somehow he did all the paperwork and got her in with in a few weeks for a lap. She did have to pay the initial consult fee but nothing with the hospital procedure.

Hi there.. I am a nurse that works in the public system.. like the gals have said it depends on the urgency! If it is just a run of the mill... 'lets have a look and see what is going on in there' type of procedure, you may have to wait a good 3 months, but might be lucky and get in quick with a cancelation, or your doctor maybe able to swing things. Also bear in mind that your specialist will more than likely not be the one operating on you, it is likely to be his registra if you are public, private you would be paying for your specialist to carry out the procedure.
If you are TTC and think you may have problems, you would be better off paying your 38 dollars per fortnight to be in a private fund. My DH and I have just been through IVF and I have since had a whole lot of procedures since our failed cycle that i thank God everyday we are private patients, and I have the best surgeons/specialists looking after me.
At the end of the day it is up to you, but from a nurse working in the public system, i know exactly what i would be doing!!!!

I went through the public system and waited 1 month for initial consultation to be told that is was just a cyst and that cysts come and go. She also told me to go home and take some naprogesic and panadol to deal with the pain and that I would be ok. So that was October and by jan & feb each month i was in mega pain so ended up getting a referral to the private ob/gyn who booked me in the next month with him in the public hospital for day surgery. He only worked in public every 2nd thursday and the first thursday was booked up with c/sections which is why he put me to the next fortnight. My "cysts come and go" ended up being a 10cm endometrioma which was just starting to adhere to my bowel!!!
So therefore I prefer to stick with this private ob/gyn.
And as funny things happen he ended up being oncall for the public system when I went in to have my dd and ended up doing my c/section!!
Now we are all in private health and when I have our next one will definately be with him.

Thanks girls, we talked about it and joined private health and now going through a private doc..a better option for us in the long run.
