Black Gum
Hello,
I am sure there is nothing to worry about, but thought I would seek some reassurance. Caden has developed a very black/blue looking gum right next to his top left tooth where the next one will come. It is swollen and must be sore because he is more irritable, clingy and drooling heaps.
Has this happened to you? Was the tooth ok when it came through?
Thanks in advance :o)

I have never heard of this happening! I've been a dental nurse for 11 years, but I'm not at all experienced with kids under two LOL.
I would be inclined to ring your MCHN line, or something like that. It's probably nothing at all to worry about, but in case it's bothering him, it's best to check it out. It sounds like blood clotting in the area, but it's hard to know without seeing. The fact that it's swollen means that it might be sore.
See if you can get some advice from a professional, and please let us know how you go :)

Okay, I've just googled it, and it seems that there is something called an eruption haematoma, which makes sense. That's where blood collects around the area where the tooth is coming through. I still think it's worth talking to someone about it though.

i was going to say its an eruption cyst! its harmless and will go once the tooth erupts, nothing to worry about, i dont even think they cause any pain

Jols, you're on the case!
Yep, the more I read about it, the more I think you don't have to worry. Perfectly harmless, in fact I can't believe I've never seen one before! You'll probably find that the tooth will arrive pretty quickly now.

janie ive never seem one either and i worked with a dental therapist! only heard about them!

Seems my little guy is quite unusual! Heh heh. Hopefully the tooth will come through quickly, very grizzly and clingy today and off his boobie, so not long. (hopefully it is not a black tooth )
Thanks for your replies! I could send a photo then you will know what it looks like LOL.
