Hi ladies,
I am 9 wks pregnant and my doctor wants me to have an ultrasound and blood test for the nuchal fold thing at 11 weeks. I am only 25 and have no cases of down syndrome in mine or my partner's families. Do I need this test done?? Also if I do not have this test done, will I still have a normal ultrasound done at 12 weeks? Very confused about the whole thing.
Hi and congratulations on being pregnant!!!
I have just been given the referral from my doctor to have the same test done, however upon phoning the ultrasoundcentre in Mulgrave, Vic, they advised they prefer to do this test at 12 weeks to ensure the baby is big enough and that they can see what they need to see clearly.
Have you called the ultrasound place to book in? What did they say?
Alibaby- if u dont have the downsydrome test done u wont have an ultrasound at all. Im only 20 and i had it done but i wanted it coz i just wanted to see my bub.. its amazing how big they are at 12 weeks.
Hi Ladies,
Just a question. Can you find out the sex at the 12 week scan?
Hi, I have a friends that are currently 14 weeks pregnant, and they had their 12 week scan, they were told that 70% sure it will be a boy, but obviously they should not rush out and buy things for a boy, but wait until their next scan to get a clearer image.
You can still get an ultrasound at 12 weeks and request that the NT measurement is not taken.
Eggs and sperm usually contain only one copy of each chromosome. Down syndrome occurs when either the egg or sperm has an extra copy of chromosome 21. When the egg and sperm combine, the 'baby' will then have 3 copies of chromosome 21. Having no family history of Down syndrome does not mean that a child will not have it.
As women get older, their eggs are more likely to have issues when they separate and not split evenly, and the egg may have an extra or a missing chromosome. This is why the chance of having a child with down syndrome is higher as you age. There is still possibility of this occurring in younger women.
Thanks for your help everyone. I am going to have the scan done as as you said Kate - even though I am relatively young, there is still a risk and I would rather know about it.
Bub2Be - I called the centre last week and gave them the date of my last period and then they booked it in according to that. it works out that I will be 11wks 3days. She said anytime between 11 and 13weeks you get the scan done. I cant wait to see what it looks like and finally get a picture! So exciting. They will also confirm the dates and everything which they prefer to do earlier as it gives them a more accurate date of when it will be due.
Honeychild- I am pretty sure you have to wait till the 18week scan to find out the sex (but i could be wrong)
