Hi There
I don't know Melbourne at all and my sisters and I are going to the Australian Open in January. I need suggestions on where to stay that is close by to the Arena's or close to public transport to get there and won't cost us a fortune.
I had a look around on accommodation sites but there are so many. Any other tips about Australian Open would be appreciated.

I usually book my accomodation through the Wotif website as they have cheap deals all over Australia ... but I would imagine you would want to book more inadvance for the tennis :rolleyes:
Thought not near the tennis, ...I highly recommend the hotel "Bayview on the Park", 52 Queens Rd, Albert Park (Melb). Very quite in the rooms, huge rooms, huge gorgeous bed & beautiful linen. Bathroom is average but fine (has a bath too). I would ask for a room at the back of the premises NOT facing the front of the Hotel where there is a busy road. Staff are very quick in serving & have a professional manner. Foyer is just stunning, chester leather couches where you can read a free newspaper in the mornings. I never had a chance to try the breakfast buffet, though premises look great :D
This Hotel is only a 3-5min walk to the tram stop on St.Kilda road which you can catch a tram to the corner of Flinders Street which crosses over Batman Avenue where the Melbourne Park is for the Tennis open (it's about a 15-20min tram ride depending on traffic) ... Then you could walk to the Melb Park from there (sorry not sure how long the walk would take but you could walk it ) ;)
When you aren't at the tennis you can catch a tram from the Bayview on the Park & go the opposite direction & head for St.Kilda for the cafes, beach, Luna Park, etc ... :dance:
In Sept last year I got a gorgeous room for only $145 on a Friday night ... though January for the tennis maybe more ??
I use to stay at the Hyatt in Adelaide for the tennis in Jan but that was many years ago now !! ... Anyway, ENJOY !!!!!!!!
You should look at accomodation in Melbourne CBD (which is only 5 min tram ride to the open, or 10 min walk). Accomodation in and around East Melbourne or Richmond would also be reasonably close.
There are a couple of Saville hotels in the city which have apartment style accomodation, and they are all within the CBD. You should be able to google them.
