Childproofing the loungeroom.

Ok I have a problem and I was hoping someone would be able to give me some bright ideas apart from buying all new furniture. Harrison is getting around everywhere (commando crawling) and I don't know how to childproof our loungeroom. Our tv unit has three shelfs and it has no front or sides. The stuff on the bottom shelf won't fit up higher. The bottom shelf is just the right height for Harrison to attack :p. Dh suggected glad-wrapping it. Anyone got any more ideas? A playpen won't work. Our other problem is the DVDs, they are on a dvd bookshelf, he can also reach them :doh:.

Be very, very careful the telly can't topple onto him. I have a set of drawer my telly and things sit on, it doesnt look FABULOUS but it makes it harder for little ones to reach stuff.

Could you use one of those screens that are designed to go in front of the fireplace to stop the sparks? Otherwise you could just mix and match your furniture from other rooms and keep the tv etc on different furniture (for now).

the other thign we do is push our coffee table against the front of our telly cabinet when we're watching tv. It means DD can stand there and pat the table but she can't actually reach the telly or DVD player or anything.

Ours sounds the same - 2 shelves high, plasma on top (that I've told DH has to be wall mounted before Izzy gets hurt or the TV smashes) and open front with DVD, Video, CD player etc..... Surprisingly although she loves to push buttons occasionally the worst that has happened is that she has used the wooden edges as a teething toy :rolleyes: there are scratches all along it that we now can't fix! gosh I'm babbling but could you put a cloth over it all somehow so it covers up the stuff at the front and you can still access it and the remotes will probably still work?? That is what I would do if I had my time over. We also have just taught her that there are things she isn't allowed to touch and by saying "no honey you can't play with that" and removing her and distracting her, she has learnt not to touch some stuff.

if there is no where to move those items i would put them in a plastic container that shuts properly some where else in the lounge room been there before with my daughter with my son i bought a buffet cabinet and i lock all the doors so no one can get into dvd's

I've got the same sort of entertainment unit and was meaning to get a canvas (ie. the ones you use for painting but with a cardboard back so it's rigid) and velcro dot it over the cabinet so she couldn't get to the stereo/DVD player etc. Was even thinking of covering the canvas with gift wrap or similar so it was a bit of a feature.

But I kinda forgot and now DD seems to have lost interest. I did test with a smaller canvas and the remotes worked fine through it.

I found that it doesn't take long for them to lose interest if the fun is taken out of it. So, no reaction and also, instead of running the tv through the video I turned the video off and just ran the tv as normal and cos the video then didn't do anything within a couple of days he was over it and doesn't really go near it now. As for the DVD's...lol that's another story, they end up all over the floor all the time!
