The longer you cook them, the better they will turn out. Shanks are meat that gets more tender the longer it's cooked. If your wanting them for tonight then I would have already put them on and you will be eating late.
I do mine in the slow cooker and have them on for most of the day. The meat is falling off the bone when I serve it.
Yup i'd second that. minimum 4 hours, but all day in slow cooker better. ;)
I do them a lot at my place - since I'm now solo doing a whole roast is just not economical.
What I usually do is get the oven REALLY hot, put the shank and the veges all in, drizzle in olive oil, and herbs and then drop the heat to just over 200 & put it in for about 30 - 45 mins, I check after about 30 mins, then once they're done, take them out, let it rest for about 10 mins & then serve.
I'm a slow cooked lamb shank girl myself, and its 4 hour minimum in our house...
