Hommus help please
Ok, have decided that it might be better to make our own hommus as DD really likes it and I think homemade (less additives) will be better for her. I made one today with a recipe off the Masterfoods site (drained chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic and water). It tastes a bit yuck and DD wont eat it. I put in some lemon juice and that seemed to help it, but there is an odd background flavour.
So does anyone have a tried and true recipe or any tips on how to make it? Am I better of using the dried chickpeas and soaking them.

I don't have a recipe handy but I would say that homemade does taste a bit different to store bought. I used canned chickpeas as I find them softer than cooked dried chickpeas. Tend not to use fresh garlic or tahini but do use salt, pepper, smoked or normal paprika, lots of lemon juice and some sweet chilli sauce. Okay this is completely un-authentic but it's suits our taste buds!
A few tips on the flavour problem - make sure you rinse the chickpeas thoroughly . I also find that the flavour improves after 24 hours in the fridge... Hope this helps!

Oops did not rinse them. One recipe just said drain and another mentioned washing, should not have been in such a rush to make it. Some paprika or cummin might help it.

Yep Astrid, you will get a MUCH better flavour from dried chickpeas! It's well worth it.

I'm with suse - dried chick peas are much better. Going to go soak some now as you have reminded me. ;)

We tend to leave out the tahini and add garlic, paprika and lemon to taste, plus S&P.
Mmmmm we always have a big batch in the fridge. just too yummy.
