Freezing and Defrosting?
This may be a silly question - but I am paronoid about food poisoning - can you freezing something, defrost it, cook it and freeze again, then defrost and eat?
I defrosted a chicken breast for DS's dinner and it was bigger than I expected, so was thinking I would crumb it and make it into some crumbed fingers, cook and freeze and use at another time..

Yep. You should be fine, just don't defrost something & refreeze it without cooking it.

Thanks Skye! It just sounded like a lot of defrosting and cooking and freezing. I knew you couldn't defrost and refreeze - just wasn't sure about the cooking. Thanks!

No its dangerous to re freeze something that has allready been frozen!!!!
my DH is a qualified food safety supervisor and teaches this course and a chef
NEVER REFREEZE MEAT!!!
meat, esp chicken is a high risk food. Once a food has hit the danger zone- between 4 degrees and 65 degrees, bacteria starts to grow. By defrosting, cooking, and then refreezing, you are exposing the food to too many chances to grow dangerous amounts of bacteria.
if you are ever unsure, food safety victoria have a great website that explains what is safe and what isnt- worth checking it out!
If you are going to freeze food that has been cooked- it needs to be fresh to start with.
sorry to contradict what advice has allready been offered, but i tend to side on caution. You cannot guarantee that the food is going to be kept at the correct and safe temps if you do this. Too many chances of the food growing dangerous amounts of bacteria!

Thats ok Odette. I was always told - even in cooking classes at school - that as long as food is cooked its ok. I'll have to remember that. I don't really do it anyway.
If something gets cooked here & not eaten it goes in the fridge. If not eaten the next day it goes to the dog.

Oh God, thanks Odette! I am so so paronoid about food poisoning. I think I might just chuck it out. Ta!

i always freeze stuff i have cooked after defrosting!! whoops

Yep I do it all the time here too with meat...but I thought that because it was cooked and then refrozen the cooking process would kill any bugs that might have grown during the defrosting process! Ooops - well in the years I have been cooking none of us have been sick touch wood but I might think about it now.
