Wont take naps!!
My 21 week old flatly refuses to take afternoon naps. Some times I put up with his grizzling for 2 hours before I give up. Once I finally got him down to discover it was 6pm, and time for his bath. He is SOOO tired by bed time. Honestly I don't quite know what to do. I've tried everything the brochers say.:dunno: What else is there, and is this going to affect his development?
I really am :wall:

I think you will get a lot of responses to this thread saying "Yes, me too!"
Until a few weeks ago DS would only sleep during the day in the hug-a-bub, otherwise he would not. But, we've got him sleeping better at night, and that has also helped him to sleep during the day. Now, he actually has 3-4 sleeps a day, and sometimes more than an hour, which is amazing!
How does your DS sleep at night? Could he be overtired, perhaps? It's a bit of a vicious circle really.
If there is anything that will get him to sleep at all during the day, do it. Slings are great, if you havn't tried them. Also, at his age he might benefit from being tired out a bit by exercise - like tummy time or some such. And, I'm sure you've been told this before, but timing is really critical. I think the main reason we've had more success with day sleeps lately is becuase we've (finally) gotten on top of this 'tired signs' thing that everyone always mentions.
You've probably tried all this, I know.... I don't think it will affect his development - lots of babies these days don't seem to sleep much during the day. Maybe it's just the lifestyles we lead now or something... One thing I would suggest is that if he really doesn't want to sleep, don't push it. There's nothing worse than spending 1-2 hours getting them to sleep and having them wake up 30 mins later :wall:
Good luck!

Hunter is a great night sleeper, for which I'm very gratfull. Goes to bed a 8pm, has a feed between 2 and 3am and then goes till 6am. I really cant complain about that. But during the day, when i can see he's absolutly exhausted, he just refuses to nap. He spends time in the "Baby Bjorn", and will sleep...eventually, but doesn't like it as he cant wiggle, like wise he hates being swaddled. I got him to take a half hour nap this arvo, but I had to push the pram around incessently to get him to do so.
During the day, he is also feeding every 1 1/2 - 2 hours, which doesnt help. That's only a recent development tho, as he's in a growth spurt.
I know his tired signs well, but it makes no difference.
Why cant they come witha "sleep"button??

What time are you putting Hunter down for a nap?
Chelsea is 21 months...and every day (when at home) she goes down at 1-130 and sleeps til around 3-4pm.
When she is at FDC its no more then about 45 mins to 1 hour.
Generally she is happy to go to bed....but today she flat out refused but i knew she was so tired i put her in bed and walked out.
Im one of the few mummies that allow my kids to cry to sleep....and thats what she did today...was only for about 15 mins of wingeing....then she passed out.
For me (and this is how i work) i let them winge or have a sooky la la in bed regardless...i know she is tired...as does my girls. They have self settled from day 1 by doing that so it has made them good sleepers.
Over night she goes 830pm-8am...no wake ups....
At this age they really do test the boundries....but stick at it...if you can see he is tired and exhausted....sleep and time out is what he needs....
Also....1230 is lunch...then that 30 mins before bed is quite time....so no tv, play quite games, listen to music...seems to help calm Chelsea down!

Lisy- Hey long time no chat... Hugs hun, IKWUM about the feeds every 1 1/2-2 hours... My DD is just like that although sleeps from 8.30-6.30am. She rarely does more then a 15-20 mins cat nap in between feeds (if i'm lucky But i have started trying to settle her before the tiredness kicks in too much. I find if i get her to have a sleep after lunch say 1.30-2 she's well rested and awake again by 3.30-4 then we have play time feed play again then by this time i have dinner prepared, run the bath. etc.
i agree with Kimbaz- i have to wrap her up sometimes and put her down and just leave her there to self settle... I dont go in unless she is badly crying then i put the music back on and try again. usually she sooka a bit but now she knows she just drifts off...
Hope you work something out... I know what its like...
Hope things are going well other wise...

A button would be great!
Well, he sleeps great at night, which is something! Actually sounds a lot like my DS, who is currently struggling against his morning nap in the other room at the moment ;).
This may or may not be helpful to you, but here's what we did to get DS to start taking days naps. BAsically, we started out by MAKING him sleep. We found that he would sleep if we put him in the hug-a-bub and rocked him for hours on end... tiring, but he slept for 5+ hours during the day. Then, once he'd had a good lot of sleep for a few days running, we started to put him down in his cot for the first stretch of sleep. This took a bit of work - wrapping, music, singing, patting - to get him to sleep, but after a few days he was able to do this fairly well. After that it got easy, as we were able to put him down for several naps a day in his cot. Once he got used to it, he would clearly signal to us when he wanted a nap and we would put him down. He now usually has 3-4 naps a day (still only short ones, working on getting them longer....) and will even 'sing' himself to sleep sometimes.
So, it's still a work in progress, but is getting better. The other thing is that he seems to need to sleep after being awake for 1.5 hrs, almost like clockwork.
Good luck.
