Is just a cot ok???
I think I've been doing far too much reading, because I have really confused myself (not hard to do lately)
I was planning to buy just a cot and put bub in there from day one.....but then I start reading things that say a cot is only suitable from 6 months??? Is this the case or is it still ok to just use the cot or do I need to put something else in the cot aswell so its not so big???
I hope I make sense  everything seems to be getting really confusing!!!

DD1 went straight to a cot....no dramas here...
DD2 went to a cradle fist cos DD1 was (and still is) in the cot...
ive neverheard of a cot only being ok from 6 months on wards?
-
I only used a cot for DS2 from day 1 and we've had no problems!

You can buy a tetra bed or some thing similar and put this in the cot until bub is bigger.

As long as you follow SIDS guidelines, firm mattress, no bumpers, no doonas, feet at the end of the bed etc a cot is fine from birth! :)

Helen - I don't have any advice but I plan to do the same thing as you. I know if we bought a bassinet we'd end up with it in our bedroom and that is not going to be practical seeing as my DH is a shift worker. As Tanstar mentioned, follow the SIDS guidelines and you should be fine. It's a bit overwhelming isn't it with all the info you read.

i have a cot and only a cot and only ever plan on having a cot. As Tanstar said.. if u follow guidlines everything will be A OK.

Thanks for the responses guys :)
I think I might look into the snuggle bed thing.....and stop reading so much!!! lol :)

I've put number 1, 2 and now number 3 in cot straight up (when not asleep in rocker or portacot or on playmat) and so far no problems - mine tend to like being wrapped for a while so I just do this and follow SIDS as best I can and they seem happy. Couldn't see the point of a bassinette myself when I wasn't looking at having them in my room and didn't have a previous child taking up the cot still.
-
I think its also the fact that in the first few weeks a lot of mothers/fathers want to be near their newborn, and its much easier setting up a bassinette or cradle in your room rather than a huge cot.....
-
The only thing I've heard is to make sure young babies are put down the bottom of the cot so they can't slip down and under the covers. If you don't wish to co-sleep there is no reason not to go straight to a cot I wouldn't think. I certainly wouldn't buy a bassinette, they don't last very long!

I was going to put DS in a cotbed from birth, until my mother intervened and bought a moses basket.
TBH, DS ended up in my bed more than his own! He went into his cotbed age 6m and OK he would have looked tiny in there from birth it wouldn't have been a bad option - so long as we used sleeping bags and not covers.
-
I put DS straight into his cot when we got home from hospital - with feet at the bottom of the cot etc etc. No problem. He was all swaddled up and tucked in with a cellular blanket so even though he looked tiny in the cot I doubt very much that he felt like he was marooned in a great big bed.
Couldn't see the point of a bassinette when he was going to grow out of it so quickly and then it would be another useless piece of outgrown baby equipment. And I didn't have to think about "transitioning" him to the cot.
If he was ever unsettled I would bring him into bed with me but truthfully that rarely happened. DS was always very good at night time, he would feed and go straight back to sleep.

Thanks for the input guys :) Im so much less confused on this one now :) And Im getting the idea that I dont really even need a snuggle bed, so long as they are wrapped or in a sleeping bag rather than under blankets......Hmm so much to get my head around LOL

I would have loved to have a cradle, but never got one. All mine had a cot. DS was actually in a porta cot for the first few months til he went out of our room.
MIL made me promise to never have a bassinette coz she lost her DS3 at 3 months old in a bassinette to SIDS. I won't tell you how coz it sounds horrible, but I would never buy a bassinette now.

My DD1 went straight into a cot from birth following the SIDS guidelines, I got a free bassinett from a friend for DD2 (DD1 wasn't in a big bed yet and I didn't want to rush her into a big bed) and used that till the cot was set up again for DD2 to use.
Baby #3 will use the bassinett till he/she grows out of it as it does come in handy rolling baby around the house so he/she isn't alone to sleep.........All my kids sleep in the lounge room with the noise during the day and in a quiet room at night time when they are new.
Cheers,
Beck
