Size confusion - help please!

Hi everyone

I'm off to the Target sale today and am planning on buying a supply of basic clothes for a newborn.

I want to get some singlets and some of the all-in-one jumpsuit things - legless because he'll be a summer baby - the snap-crotch ones.

What I'm really confused about is how many to get of each size.

Does anyone buy 0000 clothes, even just a few items for newborn? Or should I start at 000?

Any advice on how many 0000 to get, how many 000 etc. would be much appreciated.

I was thinking 4 x 0000 singlets and a couple of the all-in-one suits
and 6 x 000 singlets and a few more all-in-ones, maybe four of them.

I know we'll get clothing as gifts, but I want to make sure I have the basics ready, esp as Target have a sale starting today.

Ive bought a bout 4 x 0000 outfits and no 000 for our little man...but i figure i have alot of neutral 000 outfits from the girls.

Personally I didn't buy anything smaller than 000, and this was fine for DS1. DS1 was also a summer baby and really lived in singlet and nappy, with a shorty all-in-one to go out in.

DS2 arrived 3 1/2 weeks early so was too small for the 000, but I was able to borrow some 00000 and 0000 clothes from a friend who'd had a premmie. He didn't need them for long. If you do buy some 0000, don't buy many, especially for summer use!

What you are planning sounds good. Word of warning though. It really depends on what brand you buy. Bonds stuff is small so 0000 probably wont fit long. A 0000 easy suit may not even fit a newborn as they are tiny. My son has been out of Bonds 0000 for ages but he's only just getting too big for 0000 in other brands. My son was born 7 pound 13 ounces and 0000 was perfect for him when he was born (he is short though).

Hmm, might get a pack of 0000 singlets just in case, and maybe a couple of all-in-ones for the first week or so. Then get some more 000. I love the small sizes - they're so much cuter!

Can't wait till I've got a little one to dress!

ETA - thanks Satya, I missed your reply while I was posting. Good to know about the Bonds. Will keep that in mind too. Do you have any of the Target brand clothes?

Ditto to the bonds being small...wouldn't get any 0000 in bonds....and i wouldn't buy any singlets in 0000 as they can be worn 'too big' and still look fine, i would get mostly 000's with 2 or 3 nice going out suits in 0000 as they grow out of them so quick it doesn't matter if bubs clothes at home are a bit too big you just one a couple of jump suits that fit nicely for going out in iykwim

Yep Bonds are alot smaller. 000's should be small enough.
I'd stick with singlets in 000's too.
Get a couple of things 0000, but not too many. They might last til around 2 months in 0000 in some things, but DD2 only lasted about 2 weeks! She was 8lb 9oz born.
000 should last a good 3 - 6 months depending on the size of the baby. Jesse is 6 months & still wears 000 shorts & a couple of tshirts, but the rest are 00's. He only really made the change to 00's at about 5 months.

So, yeah. On average 000's are the best to buy. A couple of little things if you want to, but when they grow out of them its so unfair! & they do it so fast!

yeah like the others said, pick up some 0000 suits. i'd stick with the 000 singlets as like the others said, they can be worn big.

in the end we had to buy 00000 stuff as DD was born 6lbs (2.7kgs) and the 0000 stuff was swimming on her for a good couple of months. then she moved to 0000 for another month and a bit, then got to the 000. she is now 00 to 0 and has just turned 1...so you never know! you might end up with a small 'un like me! LOL!

Personally, I wouldn't worry about any 0000 - they grow so quick that 000 should be fine in most onesies - separates are different and you may need 0000 - but possibly not either. And being in Perth and he being a summer bub, he aint going to need a lot of clothes anyway unless you have a fully airconditioned house.

Target brand clothes aren't too bad, but with a boy, there are bugger all choices - their summer range for boys this year is pretty ordinary I think. So I would just get the basics from there and get outfits from somewhere else.

OK, I'm back. I got a selection, two packs of four 000 singlets, some individual 000 suits, a couple of 0000 suits, a couple of 0000 singlets (just because they're so cute and they only cost $3!). I'll take the 0000 stuff to hospital, and some 000 just in case.

Also got two safety gates, a nappy bucket (wanted two, only one left). Four sets of cotton cot sheets, some towels and face washers. Oh, and one bib.

I agree Trillian - I don't like most of their boys' stuff. I just got the singlets in plain colours - blue, white and yellow, and white and blue suits. Will get some nicer stuff from other shops. My mum bought us the most gorgeous, soft wool hoodie, in caramel and cream from BabyLand. It's so cute! It's a size 0 though, so won't use it for a while. I prefer subtle boys' clothes, not all trucks and cars. Don't want to stereotype him too much before he's even born!

Sounds like you did well on your expedition. It is really hard to find plain clothes that aren't covered in logos or pictures, but there are a few brands that are pretty good. I know JKonline usually has some plain, basic items.

If you are wanting to get any more short sleeved no leg body suits (I mostly use these instead of singlets as you can't accidentally end up with the singlet inside the nappy and ending up wet) head off to Best & Less. They have them for $1.99 right now. Some have great slogans on them, others have prints, all are cute. I've bought these before and the've lasted well despite constant washing.

DD was 10lb 4 and a summer baby. She basically didnt fit into any 0000 and 000 did last too long at all. This was mainly due to the fact that being summer all she pretty much lived in was singlets and nappies. By the time it cooled down enough, she was into 00's.

I agree with Satya, best n less do the best clothes and quite cheap too.

Jenjams - wow! That's a big baby - my younger sister weighed about the same I think. I love the chubby ones! Although my brother and I were smaller - around about 7lb. It would be really helpful to know in advance how big they're going to be! But if he's big, then I haven't spent much on the 0000, and mine will be a summer baby too, so I'm anticipating the singlet/nappy situation as well.
