Fibroid close to cervix

Hi everyone

At my 20 week ultrasound the sonographer found a 3.2cm fibroid which was close to my cervix. There has been talk of me having to have a c section.

I just had another scan today at 32 weeks & the fibroid has grown to 4cm - which I don't think is too much over 12 weeks.

I now have to wait for an OB to look at the report before finding out from my midwife next Friday what they want me to do.

I really really really don't want to have a c section (of course if I have to for the saftey of my daughter I have to). Has anyone else had a similar experience & share the outcome. I'm having my baby at Sunshine Hospital & am not sure how pro c-section they are (you knw, some Dr's & hospitals go the c-section straight away).

I guess I'm just needing to hear from people who have had a similar experience with a positive outcome.

I had a c section with my first ( @ werribee) Dr's will only do a c section if u or bubbs life is at risk.

hi there, i just had a diagnosis of fibroids (three, roughly 4cm each, give or take) when investigating my last two m/c. from what i was told, smallish myometrial fibroids (buried in the muscle layer) should not affect you giving birth, even near the cervix (one of mine is) but regular u/s to check the growth is recommended as estrogen in pregnancy can make them grow rapidly. your fibroid is very slow, from those measurments. depending on your age, i would adopt a wait and see approach, after all, if a c/sect becomes necessary you can decide pretty much at the last minute. i've been told by the midwives, the OB and the consulting radiologist that 4cm should not be a problem.

I had a client recently who had a 5cm fibroid - there was talk of a c/section but hers was well away from the cervix so she told them to go jump.
Had a straightforward vaginal birth.

Hopefully my midwife will say its all ok for me to try naturally. I tend to panic before it's neccessary!

Can the hospital force you to book in for a c-section or can they only advise you? Does anyone know?

You can never be forced into surgery hun. They can advise you and that's it. The decision is ALWAYS yours to make.

Try not to stress out too much over it. Close to your cervix is one thing. Covering it is another :D

Hi Ladies

I had my midwife appointment today hoping to find out what was going on with this fibroid. Unfortunately the tools at the hospital didn't send the ultrasound report to an OB to review it so I had no news today. The midwife has booked me in for a highrisk appointment with an OB for Tuesdya afternoon so I have to wait a little longer. Perhaps they could just wait until I give birth!

I told the midwife regardless of the outcome I don't want to book in for a c-section & want to at least try. She said that as long as the fibroid doesn't interfere with the baby's head engaging I should be ok. I told her that I was worried that the OB may be 'scalpel happy' & go stright for the c-section, but she assured me that they would all prefer that I had a natural birth.

I just want the outcome to go my way. No one else that I discuss this with seems to understand why I so want a natural birth. They give the standard 'as long as the baby is healthy...whatever is best for the baby...' No ****. Of course I want what is best for my baby too, but I hust want to give it a go, especially if this is my last pregnancy, I want to be able to feel what it's likes to give bith naturally again. I took it for granted last time that I'd just be able to do it again.

Ah well, I better go. Getting a little emotional now - I blame hormones! :)

I have the same problem although I am not as far along as you. I am 14w2d and have a 6cm fibriod on the right of my cervix. I have 3 others as well but none of those seem to be an issue and as far as I was aware and I only had 2 prior to falling pregnant so I don't know what that is about! The lady who did my 12 week ultrasound said they could go either way in pregnancy.

At this stage for me I have taken a wait and see what happens at the 20 week scan attitude but it is hard not to think the possibility of a c section because thats not what I want. At the same time i don't want to get my knickers in knot because i have also been told that it is common for them to go away (which is what happened to my mum).

I totally understand were you are coming from about wanting to try a vaginal birth before you go the c section option. That would be my preference as well if mine doesn't move/go away.

Hmmm, I posted after I saw the High Risk OB at 33 weeks but it mustn't have worked!

So, I saw the OB at the hospita;l who by some miracle was the OB I saw for my first pregnancy with my daughter. He was fantastic then & fantastic now! He basically said that there was nothing to worry about as it was small & that I should just be allowed to go into labour sponatneously as with any other birth. He was quite annoyed that I was made to worry for nothing!

I am due in 2 days but am sure I'll go over. If I remember I'll let you know that outcome!

thought id let you know that Lily arrived on 9 november with no interference from the evil fibroid! Drug free 7hr &1min labour. all that worry for nothing!

Well that is comforting for me. Here is hoping my evil fibriod hasn't grown much when I have my 19 wk scan in a couple of weeks!

jaxstar - I had a fibroid show up on my 12 weeks u/s with DS. 3cm. It was about 6cm at my 20 week u/s, and close to my cervix.
OB was not worried about it at all and said there was no reason not to try labour normally. I had another check at 36 weeks, but that was more for my benefit, he wanst fussed about having it. At that scan, they couldnt find it at all, so not sure what happened there.

Its when they get to 20 and 25cm and are blocking your cervix that it might be an issue.
