How many Embies for FET success????

hi everyone,

well i am back from my nice little holiday in new Zealand and am ready to start thinking of baby making again... lol...:lol:
i recently had my first full stim IVF cycle and used 2 embies, (2 day 4 cell with no fragmentation). it resulted in a BFN.:(
i had 12 eggs removed, 6 fertilised and only 4 remain.:clap:

my Question to you all is ... how do you decide how many embies to use when i decide to have a FET???:wall:
i understand that by having two you have double the chance.
if you have had a fet and it was success, how many did you use?
i have had endo, polyps and had a chocolate cyst removed with two laps in the last 4 years.
i also have a DD who is 3.5 and was concieved naturally. i have had lot's of acupuncture this year and am wondering if i should try chinese Medicine???

can i just tell you one story re numbers.... as I am completely freaked out........

I always only ever put one embryo back such was my fear of twins, but my DP's sister who has been TTC for years and years (both she and DH had fertility issues) decided to put 2 embryos back and last night announced that one of those embryos split and the other took - which means TRIPLETS !!! DP and I are totally freaked out.
They were a week ahead of us but I guess may not be prem with so many bubbas inside... so all I can say is think worst case scenario. I know personally i was getting frustrated and said to DP last cycle - stuff it put them all back !!!! thank god I didn't !! Anyway it is rare but it can happen. Best of luck !!!!

Putting two embryos back doesn't actually double your chance of success. It only increases the chances slightly. That's why many clinics won't allow two to be put back - there is not much benefit compared to the risk of having twins (which is increased by 30%)

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying that you need to be realistic about the odds. Good luck with your decision anyway. :)

any way hun were having 2 put back this time but like sushee said it doesnt mean it going to double our chances BUT it is ivf # 3 for us so they are letting us do 2 as we are only trying for 1 bub but if 2 can help well why not.

I think that this is a really hard decision, but one DH and I have just gone through. We have done one stim cycle - 5 x embies, 3 x BFN, 2x did not thaw. For a number of reasons, for our seconde stim cycle we decided to put two fresh back - partly because we lost 50% in thaw so we wanted to minimise the number frozed, but I think we will also put 2 frozen back as well. While it wont double the chance, it will give you an increased chance of falling pg - but also of having twins - which does have down sides. Be prepared though for how you will feel if you put two back and get a BFN - as I think we are about to, as it is really hard to deal with esp if you only have low numbers of embies in reserve!

I am doing FET tomorrow as long as we have survivors. My first stim cycle did result in a BFP but also a missed miscarrage. - we had 8 frozen 2 day old embryos and the plan this time was to defrost and develop to blast stage. We were told we could transfer 2, and decided to defrost 4, as any excess that made it could always be refrozen. They phoned Monday to say we had lost 3 of the 4 and did we want to defrost more which we said yes. They spoke to DH who did not ask about actual numbers so I find out this afternoon if we have two or one to go ahead. I am hoping the 1 in 4 is a real fighter - but it still has so many hurdles to overcome.

While I often cling to statistics to make me feel better we all have different issues that cannot be expressed in the general figures. We decided to do a double transfer as my major issue is the quality of my eggs due to my age. I hope there is one good one there and I think I will find it sooner if we transfer two, the risk of health issues associated with twins scares me (though having two babies would be welcomed). I am a twin so my mother should be a great help! I think I will only have time for 1 more stim cycle so I am feeling the pressure of time.

My advice is to take the scientific advice and relate it to your situation rather than take statistics as gospel.

We have just commenced our new cycle in preparation for having 2 FET's transferred in approx 2 weeks time.

Having 2 transferred doesn't double your chances (as the other girls have said), but in our case we had 1 transferred from our IVF cycle and luckily have 14 in the freezer. We elected to have 2 put back in per FET mainly so that we would know sooner rather than later if any of our frosties is a good one, ie: possible 7 future FET's instead of 14.

We looked at a few options, 1 being if I have to undergo 7 FET's to get a possible BFP, this will take us about 2 years, where if we did 14 individual FET's this would be about 3 1/2 - 4 yrs and based on my age (36) and we didn't get our BFP at all, we would prefer to do another stim cycle while I'm still in my 30's rather than 40 to hopefully get better egg quality.

Also we have taken into consideration the cost factor of doing 7 double FET's compared to 14 individual FET's (ie: double the cost).

If we are fortunate to get twins from our FET, then we take that as meant to be and if just one then that was our plan all along.

You have to really assess the best thing for you and DH, but no matter what you chose then that decision is the best one for you.
