Gestational diabetes
I am 27 weeks pregnanat and went for the blood glucose test last week. The doc phoned yesterday and said that there are indications that I might have GD and I need to go for more tests. I wouldn't be too surprised because I have picked up alot of weight recently and my father is an insulin dependant diabetic for the past 30 years. Well, what I want to know is if anyone else has been diagnosed with this and how it has impacted the pregnancy.

HI Miss H,
I had my second GD test this week and just had confirmation today that I do have GD. No diabetes in the family, I am (especially now) overweight and am over 35, which are triggers for GD.
Since I failed my first test 1 week ago, I've been eating low GI foods, as I was pretty sure I had GD. This is not much fun, but I'm sure i can handle salad sandwiches on multi-grain everyday for 3 months if it helps that baby not grow too much from excess sugar in the blood.
I know other people have been able to manage their GD through food and exercise alone (I have been very lazy for about a year), who have still been able to treat themselves with yummy foods every week or so.
I'm waiting to have an appt with a specialist to go over my diet, and I'll see my OB next week. I think it will be manageable - a little bit annoying but not too hard.
Good luck!
Carole

Hi Miss H,
This is my 2nd pregnancy and I was diagnosed with GD a little over a month ago. I wasn't tested for it in my last pregnancy so not sure if I had it then. I have type 2 diabetes in my family so I am guessing that maybe why I have GD, plus now being pregnant has made me overweight.
Anyway I have been lucky so far to control it with diet alone, no insulin need (not yet anyway). I am sure your GP or midwife will send you to see a diabetes educator (or someone along those lines) who will explain how to control it. But like Carole said, stick to low GI foods. Also there is a GD forum on belly belly, the girls in the forum are lovely and have been very helpful to me and can give you great tips on what or what not to eat. It can be confusing at times. I have 3 wks to go until I have my baby (I am having a caesar - not due to GD on the 3rd of Nov) and I am counting down the days until I can eat food again without worrying about blood sugar levels etc. I am  mine goes away after the baby is born.
Good luck with everything!!!
