Would you start TT??

I've been asked by the girls at day-care if I would like them to start TT dd.

She is now 20 months old and I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do. I would LOVE to have her off dipers before ds comes, but I don't want to pressure her ... and I have NO clue as how to TT a todler :lol: :redface:

The girls at day-care says that she is eager to potty and her seeing all the older kids do that, is making her want to TT. She will tell them when she wants to go to the toilet. I have allowed them to let her do that, but told them to hold off TRAINING her .. as I feel she is to young?? Is she to young??? I thought kids TT at 2 years???

She goes to the potty just before bathtime ... 99% she don't wee, just sit on the potty, tells me to sit on the loo and then proceed to wipe her dry bottom with toiletpaper.

I dont really have any good advice.. sorry.. but just wanted to post here so I could stalk this thread.

But personally, i wouldnt force her. Follow her lead. My little girl is 19 months and she is interested in toilets... loves watching us sit on the loo and she takes her nappy off when she has done a poo. When we change her nappy its often dry, so we ask her if she wants to sit on her toilet (potty) and she usually runs over to it and waits. So, we help her take off her pants so she can sit on it. Sometimes she'll do a wee, sometimes she wont. But she seem aware of it when she is doing a wee. I only let her sit on the potty because she shows an interest in it. I wouldnt do it if she wasnt interested in it.

CC workers are pretty in tune to picking up the signs of readiness. So if they are saying she is ready, then she may well be ready.

Can DD pull her pants down by herself? If she can then maybe buy her some training pants and let her run around outside with the potty nearby. Ask her every 1/2 hour or so if she needs to do a wee or poo and she will let you know. TTing really is not hard when they are ready. aske her if she would prefer a nappy or knickers, and if she wants a nappy ask if she needs to wee or poo.

ATM Sarah wears a nappy when we are in the car or out and always tells me when she wants to go. Some days she never needs a nappy change.

Follow her lead hun. let her run around naked in the yard to get the sensation if she wants. Always have a potty nearby and she will be a quick one from what you have said. There is nothing wrong with TTing early. It is cheaper and easier!

Be prepared though, when a new baby comes they often regress, so she may want nappies again once the little man is out.

Karina - DD loves blowing raspberries on my thigh when I sit on the loo :rolleyes: And she knows that if you have sat on the loo, you need to wipe your bottom with toiletpaper and that goes INSIDE the loo.

Ali - She can't yet pull down her pants on her own, or maybe she just won't. When I ask her to undress for bathtime, she would just come and stand with her back to me and say: "Undress mommy" Bad mothering :p

You know what I also forget ... she was prem ... 6 weeks. So although she is 20 months, she is not really 20 months. And the pull-down- self-pants-thing is still bothering me. Also I don't know when last I took a nappy off and it was dry, if ever. And she still gets something to drink during the night. AND she does not have the vocabulary yet ... knows wee and poo, but I'm not sure that she actually GETS what the means, kwim??? OR I could just be lazy in training her *sigh*

After thinking and reading on the internet (wicked internet ... makes you doubt yourself) I don't know if I should TT her, or if I should just wait till after the Little Man comes and do it then. But I do soooo want to take advantage of summer, kwim?? Maybe I should first get her off the night-time drinks. She does not drink alot, like 50ml ... but she wakes up three or four times during the night to drink it. HAVE to get her off that!!

ETA: After reading that last two paragraphs .. I'm in serious doubt of my mothering skills .... maybe I just want to keep her small ARGGGHHHHHHH bugger!!!!!

if she's seeing older kids at CC do it, no wonder she's thinking about it

the first part of TT-ing is Toilet Awareness - sounds like that's what she is into right now - i'd follow her lead.

i think it's great that your CC workers are asking you about this.

but i'm guessing you are pregnant, and i could well understnad you being worried about the "oopsies" you'll have to clean up WHILST she is TT-ing.

but some people i read their posts, and they talk of their kids TT-ing quite quickly - so who knows?

are you worried about having to bend down (whilst preg) to pull her knickers up and down, wipe her etc? cos that is a legitimate concern. (back pain in preg. etc).

it may well be better for your back to change her on the changetable - better ergonomics etc).

I would ask the CC workers - would it work for her to be TT-d at CC, but not at home? like a part time thing? That way, YOU woulnd't have to be doing the extra bending, wiping, mopping up etc. I have no idea if this part time idea would work or not, but it woulnd't hurt ot ask the CC workers.

i'm not preg, and my DD is a little older than you, but i am DREADING all the "misses" and the mopping. my 23 month old cannot say wee or poo, cannot dress herself, but doesn't sound as interested as your child. SHe's also in the "Under Two's Room" at CC, so i don't think she sees older kids training like yours does. I cannot get her to even SIT on the potty for more than one second.

If you want to delay the TT-ing due to being heavily preg, and the physicality of TT-ing, i think that is totally legitimate and understandable.

you need to do what suits your family, not any arbitrary "rules".

i'm sure CC are just tryign to give you an option, not to impose tt=ing schedule on you. Just communicate with them. They might be doing what THEY think is the kind thing to you too, to get her TT=d before your nb arrives.

I also think it's great the CC's talk to me about this. I appreciate their input, because this is my first and I am a "dumb" mommy ... were never exposed to babies :lol: Although BellyBelly are doing a fine job in broading my knowledge.

Yes I am pregnant, but it's not the oopsies I'm really worried about. We have wooden floors in the house, only carpet in the bedrooms, so mopping up would be easy. And it's just wee and poo .. I have cleaned up worse stuff in my life :think: And the bending is still going fine atm. I even dress her on the floor, because she is a bit of a worm and wriggels off the change-table sometimes. So no, it's not that I don't want to because I'm pg or it gross me out. Although ... some of those poo nappies could send a heard of elephants on stampeed!!

I think it's because I don't know what I'm doing :rofl: I don't know where to begin. It's the not knowing exactly how that scares me/makes me uncertian ... much like breastfeeding :lol: ... silly I know. And also I'm not sure I could keep up with the "strictness" (doing it over and over and over and over) of it.

I'm also not sure if it's the right time with the baby coming in Dec.

Well my DD was a good bit older before she was interested (about 28 months) but she was taking her nappy off as soon as she'd done anything in it, and when i let her go about with no pants on she'd go in the potty sometimes.

However i'm not sure how "ready" she was. Because she's 30months now and we're still at it (TT). A few weeks ago she was reliable-ish in the house if she was pantless, but it's coming into winter now and it's freezing, so i can't let that go on forever. She's a bit unco and not great at getting trousers and pants up and down, she tends to take them all right off to do a wee and then has to get dressed again and it's not really happening, iykwim. Today i bought gummi bears to bribe her with as she seems to have developed a fascination with the wee but stopped doing it in the potty. Last night she peed directly onto my bed, under my pillow. It's a futon and after having to dry and flip the mattresses and remake the bed at 1am before i could get in it, i would rather bribe if it works. Since i told her she could have a gummi bear if she went in the potty we've had 100% success (2 wees) BUT she's actually still (25mins on) playing with the 2nd one, rather than eating it.

She is only really this week seeming able to hold it at all. Before now she could tell me she needed to go (though she didn't always) and she could go in the potty if there was one nearby, but she was unable to hold it at all. So if she was dressed she'd pee her pants trying to get to the potty, or if she was involved playing with something she'd just pee and not even TRY to get to the potty.

So i have no answers. But it's my first time too (so was BFIng - not that hard i promise! :lol: ) and i guess we're muddling through.

I think if she sits on the potty ect it can't hurt to give it a go for a week.. My Ds2 was TT at 23 months..

If it doesn't work or she is feeling under pressure then simply stop and go back to doing it on her terms

Ok, no I have decided, after yesterday afternoon, that I'm going to wait a while. Maybe till after she settled in with ds and a new day-care in Jan.

I picked her up at day-care yesterday and as soon as we got home, I went to the bathroom with me and took her along. Undressed her and put her on the potty. She sat there content and we chatted for a while. She said she were finished, but there were nothing in the pot. I let her go play, naked. Just as she was out the door, she made a wee on the floor. So I clean her, clean the floor and put a knicker on her. She played for a while and about an hour later (I placed the potty in the kitchen with us ... just to have it close by) she wetted herself again, called me after the fact and told me "Lani mess" So I cleaned her up and slapped a diper on her bottom :(

After really, really thinking this thru, I'm not sure she is ready. I think I will begin serious training after she can take her pants and diper off herself. It might also be "quicker" to do it when she is a bit older and understand me a bit better ... I'm eagerly awaiting that eager-to-please-phase.

Bec - Bummer on the wee under the pillow!! And yes, most days I feel I'm just muddling through this motherhood thing. Hopefully she does not turn out too bad :p I also hope the bf is easier this time around!! ;)

FWIW, I didn't start TTing my DD until about a month ago (and she's 2 1/2) and she didn't show all of the signs Pinky mentioned. BUT she could hold on for hours (dry nappies and few accidents when we got rid of the nappy) and I honestly think that's the most important sign. If their little bladder can't hold on, what's the point? My DD got it in a week. I think the longer you wait (until your DD is ready), the easier it probably is!

I deducted that from all the internet reading I've done these two days and it makes LOADS of sense for me. So definatly not going to push her any further ... going to allow her some morning potty time, just afer she wakes up and just before her bath in the evening.
