Weaning DS..... off his Bonds Wondersuit!

Hi Everyone,

I'm after some suggestions. I've just recently discovered that my DS won't sleep through the night unless he is wearing his Bonds Wondersuit..... very strange. Its getting pretty hot now so in order to get a full night's sleep we've had to sleep with the aircon on so he can wear his suit.

The only thing I have altered with his sleeping is his suit. DS still likes to be firmly wrapped so I still do that and tuck in a sheet firmly over that. In the last couple of weeks I've had him sleep in short sleeved body suits and he was waking 3 times per night :o and the other night I tried a Bonds Coverall (and all-in-one suit with no feet in it) thinking that surely this would be ok and he woke twice :wall:. So, last night I put him back in his Wondersuit and he slept from 9pm-5.15am.

What is it about that Bonds Wondersuit? Is it the material its made from or the fact that his feet are in? Any suggestions on how to transition him to summer sleepwear would be fantastic.

What about a light-weight cotton sleeping bag? It may just be the sensation of air ... you could try socks?

Kazbah - I tried him in a Grobag for a few nights and he was up 3 times a night. Maybe it is a foot thing.... Maybe I could try him in the Coverall with socks and if that works then leave the socks on and then slowly shorten the length of the legs in his suits.

lol bless him. How cute. He might like how it all feels nice and cosy. Is he sweating in them? They are cotton so if he's not maybe he's ok for a little longer? How does he sleep in the day? Your idea of socks may just work too, worth a try.

Ozziehoffy - It is cute that he's apparently so particular. Its cooler here again today so he'll be fine tonight in his suit but there have been nights when he's been sweaty. I probably can get away with it for a little longer but I don't want to have to make him go cold turkey in a few weeks if I can help it. During the day he's not a good sleeper - won't self settle. We usually only get one sleep cycle (40mins at a time) unless I'm there to rock/pat him at the first sign of movement.

Oh yes, Oskar was like that during the day also when he was around the same age! Maybe try the footless suit with socks like you said. Never know? I also wonder if maybe you do the short suit like you'd done but put socks on him as well?? It's so hard when the weather is all over the place!! If you're in Brissy I hear ya cos I've been having dilemmas with bedtime dressing also.

Ozziehoffy - Good idea. I think I'll try the Coverall with socks and then if that goes ok move to a body suit with socks. If that's too much of a change maybe I'll have to sacrifice some Wondersuits by cutting the feet out and slowly shortening them.... You guessed right that we're in Bris :D - crazy weather

My DS was exactly the same with his thick fleece suit. he got so attached to it during the winter of 2007 that when he had a bad night over the summer I would put him back in it crank up the aircon and we'd all get a good nights sleep! here I was thinking I had the weirdest little guy out, that he was obsessed with his sleep suit. It seems that there are other little weirdo's out there:lol:

I have no advice just an understanding of how frustrating it is. All I can say is that eventually it wears off, although now my DS is obsessed by his spiderman doona cover. It gets washed and straight back on as he sleeps in a "spider bed".......

Well, last night I put my plan into action and had him sleep wrapped in his usual way in his Bonds Coverall with socks. I was not hopeful but DH still insists that sleeping through has nothing to do with the Wondersuit...... Anyway after 2 nights of 8 hours sleep in his Wondersuit without a peep, DS woke at 1:30, 4:15 and 5:00 :rolleyes: So I'm guessing its not a foot thing then but a Wondersuit thing. Not sure what my next move is going to be but I may be cutting the toes out of his Wondersuits and working my way up the legs until he can handle it. Any other suggestions?

krisp - Nice to know I'm not the only one who's had this trouble. I am starting to think DS is a little weird! :lol: I hope it wears off soon (ie. before summer really hits).

What does he wear during the day? like to play etc?

Yasin insisted on being wrapped for ages and then eventually we realised that he was ok with out wrapping if he could still have the wrap in bed with him. Maybe he might be happy to cuddle it while he sleeps in something else?

You can get singlet suits in wndersuit material, so maybe try that? Or even cut the sleeves on a wondersuit to make it long legs with sleeves? Gotta be better than fully covered...

Kazbah - It was a very annoying night and I'm shattered today. Thankfully DS has had a sleep this arv and I've managed to aswell. During the day DS wears shorts and t-shirt if we're going out or at home all-in-one romper suits with short sleeves and short pants. He generally doesn't sleep well during the day. Won't self settle after a sleep cycle unless he's in his bouncer with the vibrate on. Luckily he's never had a problem self settling at night.

dachlostar - Thanks for your thoughts. I wonder if he would like to cuddle it. That would be so random though. I hear about babies cuddling teddies and blankies but not Wondersuits! :lol:

Sarah_H - Thanks heaps. I've been wondering if you could get bodysuits in that Wondersuit material. I'm going to take a look this week. I think my next move is going to be to cut the feet out of his Wondersuit and see how he goes..... not tonight though. I need a good night's sleep so he'll be fully suited up.

PP, you can get short sleeve and I think they have little short legs in wondersuit material. I have a couple somewhere, however they were given to me so I'm not sure where you'd get them. Maybe try Big W..... where do you live? I may be able to find them if you get stuck and let you have a try if you can't find any.

Can you wrap him with a muslin so the wrap is much lighter and cooler, rather than what he is wearing? Maybe even go to Spotlight and buy the material make your own super large muslin sheet for tucking in over the top rather than using a cotton sheet?

Just trying to come at it from a different angle!
